My sister lives in Winnipeg and she never watches Raptors basketball. She watched the Raps game last night.

TSN and the Toronto sun are pretty much the culprits in this. If you promote the team people will watch. 2nd round? LeBron? biggest ever, I'm pretty sure.

It is amusing to listen to some of the radio hockey guys have to stretch out their basketball segments without much of clue what to discuss beyond their usual 5 minutes. Some of them got to be dying inside.
When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?

Please advise….

Love stories like this.

Somebody needs to gather them and beat MLSE over the head with these anecdotes. This is the hidden cost of burying games on secondary channels - there's a whole generation of potentially interested fans out there.

Wins, especially playoff wins, will always get higher ratings. Just keep winning.

I guess this wasn't known but some insight on why TSN went to hockey right after the game.

TSN had the rights for both the Raptors game and the Flyers/Rangers game. They ended up keeping the Raps and "loaned" the hockey game to SN360 with the agreement that when the Raptors game was over, they would show the end of the Flyers/Rangers game. That's why both networks had the game at one point. SN360 couldn't just bail on the hockey game and piss of its viewers.

So yes, they went to the game right after BUT they chose the Raps over playoff hockey in the end.

I think that game was carried on CTV/NBC.....but I think the most watched Raptors game may have been Vince's return to Toronto after the trade.....TSN would have had that I thought. Could be wrong.

Ahhh this explains it. It didn't spike because of the Raptors.

It likely spiked the last minute because the Hockey game was starting. TSN cut right away to it because they knew they were going to lose the audience if they didn't.

Hope I'm wrong but that explains a whole lot. Especially if it was the very last minute.

What makes it even stranger is that the same hockey game was on SN360 and TSN was still so quick to jump to it.

They were saying on tsn radio they kept advertising dollars when it was back on there station vs 360.

And the office today many older people who don't watch basketball watched at least part of it. They all basically said they were flipping back and forth with hockey and baseball. The older guys aren't really basketball fans, but sports fans and had no problem jumping on bandwagon haha

Lots of Habs fans outside of Toronto.

Great to see the numbers rising slowly. I suspect a lot of people watched during that peak time at the end of the game cause it was a close and stressful/exciting finish with the hometown team winning.

Even if you got stragglers tuning in for some sort of hockey coverage, that's great. That's how you get exposure with non-fans with no effort. Hopefully some stuck around and enjoyed it. Hopefully more comeback Friday and tell other people.

Road game, will probably draw even better numbers but it's also a Friday night.

There will always be a core hockey fan in this country that hates on the team. Only way to grow fans beyond Toronto and maybe Vancouver is to have sustained success over a period of time. Then, in time, the fans will come too.

Here are the ratings for the week for sports across English canada.
Looking at the canadiens games my jaw drops because that is English only, there french side would probably double those numbers.

Without the Habs playing I wonder how much the Raps ratings would boost???
