Players were asked, in his era, two questions...

1) Who wouldn't you want to have to guard with the game on the line?

2) Who wouldn't you want guarding you with the game on the line?

Michael Jordan was the answer to both questions.

MJ is someone who goes to battle every game.
His ball skills is amazing but the most exceptional thing about him is his character and personality, his drive to win.
Jordan has that demeanor, that aura around him.

Jordan beats his opponents both mentally and physically.

It's tougher back then than it is today.

JORDAN IS a freak of an athlete when he was younger probably on Ross' level combined with the HUNGER to get better (post moves shooting etc). I think hell dominate the league if hes playing right now.

In today's rules and with our current knowledge of training and nutrition he wouldn't be stopped. The closest person to Jordan right now is no-one. Well maybe... No no-one. Even Lebron would not be as dominant in Jordan's era going against the big bodies of Oakleys, Grants, Rodmans, Mutombos, Olajuwons, Barkleys, Malones, Smiths, Kemps - oh lawd let me stop now before I faint.
Ska needs to make a comeback.

Glad I am old enough to had witnessed the greatest player to ever play basketball. Helps avoid making silly threads like this.

Its funny because yesterday I was listening to NBA Radio, and a caller made the same silly claim, that Jordan was overrated and would not have had the success in today's NBA, that he had during his career.

Radio announcers of course hung up on the caller, then went on a 30 minute rant as to why Jordan would have had more success in today's NBA than he had to fight for during his career. Jordan played against men, men that were allowed to defend with their entire bodies. He would have a field day in todays game, under today's whistle happy refs and the limitations on defending that were not present during the Jordan era.

While team defense has gotten better overall and iso ball has become more of an option rather than an entire offensive scheme unlike the early 2000's and 90's, i would still have to disagree with you. Jordan is not overrated. Sure his 80's numbers were ridiculous and he only started winning as soon as bird retired...but he is the goat. don't ask me why though.

Jordan was more athletic than Ross. Jordan had a vert like Lavine (44-46 inches) except MJ was a very strong 215lbs at his peak and was a complete *sshole who believed he was the best every single time he was on the court.

This is what I don't get. Young kids say Jordan couldn't dominate today but if prime Jordan played today he'd be a top 5 athlete (on par with Wiggins, Westbrook etc) and he was butter from the mid rand and in. He had a lightning quick first step, could jump off of one or two feet and had the best body control and finishing ability everyone has ever seen. All of those up and under, hand-switching in mid air arsenal of moves you see guys doing today they got from MJ.

Serious, OP needs to just go watch some you tube flicks, especially the one covering the Dream Team. At that time Magic, Bird Barkley etc were all jawing at each other trying to claim top dog status and by the end of the trip everyone came home and relinquished that title to Michael.

This is a good point. With how important team defense and team ball movement have become, Jordan would have to alter his approach to the game. He'd have to become a better PnR ball handler and passer in general. Like Kobe in the Gasol era, I think he could make the adjustment though.

For the people who never really saw him play, just imagine Kobe with better fast-twitch muscles. Slightly quicker, better elevation on his jumper, his crossover and turn around just had a bit more oomph to them that gave him more time and space to square up.

The argument though isn't about the quality of opposing players in each era, it's about how teams function so much differently and how Jordan would've had to become a bit more like Magic/Lebron in how he created offense.

Did you see his field goal percentages? Did you see that Bad Boys ESPN 30 for 30? The game was just as rough back then if not more maybe. Sure, he wouldn't be as dominant in today's era but he'd still be on par with a guy like Lebron James imo.

There are only 2 teams in the league that rank in the top 6 in offensive and defensive efficiency: the Golden State Warriors and the Toronto Raptors.

The Duke wrote:Overall Basketball Skill Level were higher in previous eras.
Games were refined and coaches coached more to players (and players internallized it more).

Today NBA is based alot more on the physical aspect of the game. (ones physicallity).
Be it muscle development, increased off court training

How was the skill level higher in previous eras? I must be missing something because there's more good shooters, better ball movement, and better ball handling than ever before. Last time I checked, those were all basketball skills.

The two things that were certainly better in the past were the post/interior games of big men. I would argue the mid range game was better in the past. That being said, the last 10 years we've seen some absolutely dynamite mid range players like Nowitzki, Aldridge, Bryant, Hamilton, Roy, Nash, Bosh, Wade etc.
