Well put! People are underestimating the executive workload in the past couple of months with the back-and-forth to find a location (feds, 3 cities, internal), run the draft, get everyone settled including themselves, and do all the other normal things (league meetings, marketing, etc). The path has been clearly laid out for anyone with a long attention span. THey're doing the coaching staff, lower rung executives and now the senior executives are negotiating their own contracts and roles. Once the season launches, there will be ample time to finalize the GM and president contracts.

Masai not giving a 100% is leverage... if he came out and said he definitely wanted to come back he'd lessen his negotiation stance, which would make him a bad negotiator, which would make us not want to keep him.

But yes, let's lose out minds because he's doing the thing that makes us want him.

WOJ tweeted Ujiri was leaving to the Wizards at the second the raps won the ship and while he was going through the issue with the officer (something he did not talk about much).

I think Masai and Bobby are locked in but are waiting to close out the preseason with a potential bang. You make a big trade for a big name and announce you sign the exec team at the same time. Gives the raps a lot of market confidence for their next move either at the trading deadline or in the offseason.

WOJ also had an agenda. He was most likely being paid by the Clippers to be their shill. And with the Clippers eyeing Kawhi as much as they did.. any negative news towards the Raptors would be in their favour. Like say the President of the team that brought in Kawhi might leave for Washington or go to jail / get in trouble from that arena cop.

You have to strip away biases when reading what reporters write.. WOJ has a history of that kind of stuff. Read some of the favourable articles he wrote about Dumars back in the day when he was running the Pistons.

I don't think they are waiting on any type of bang at all. This has been a really hard/long season/off season. Getting his own contract signed is probably one of the last things on his mind right now, especially when he knows he's not going anywhere.

If he does stay in the NBA, I only see it in a position that places him as Commissioner-in-waiting. He's beyond running teams.

The history of the league suggests that Masai will never be the commissioner or even considered for that position. Of the 5 commissioners that the NBA has had, 4 were lawyers/had a law degree and the one who wasn't was heavily involved in American politics. All of them come from prestigious universities: Yale, Notre Dame, Northeastern, Columbia, University of Chicago. Mark Tatum is most likely to succeed Adam Silver, he attended Cornell and graduated from Harvard Business School. Before working in sports Tatum was a marketing executive for companies like PepsiCo and Procter and Gamble, and he went on to work as an executive in the MLB before joining the NBA. He has played a big role in the globalization of basketball, and has negotiated television contracts with multiple networks.

I'm not saying it's impossible for Masai to attain that position but it is highly improbable.

I agree that it's improbable based on historical precedent, but I do think we live in interesting times and that Ujiri represents an opportunity to evolve the role. He lacks experience on the media business side and perhaps other areas, but would bring new strengths and relationships. Most importantly, he is a strong leader, which is key when it comes to inevitably building out your support structure (as every Commissioner needs) to help augment your own areas of inexperience. Also, Sliver isn't going anywhere soon and I used "Commissioner-in-waiting" on purpose, as he has agency over how to spend the next few years of his career and which skills to focus on.

Aside from being qualified, NBA rosters are 75% black. Given a pool of equally strong candidates, I think it would eventually benefit the NBA to have leadership that's representative.

Anyway, I think this is moot as his most likely pursuit will be out of the league entirely.

Shanahan was signed to a 6 year contract extension for accomplishing noting last season. Masai better be offered more than any of his Maple Leafs counterpart and then some.

People often forget this about MU, when BC was GM the rule was .. go ahead and talk to the press, just be nice.
MU instigated heavy internal repercussions for discussing anything business related to the press.. he has a massive zero leak policy and it shows.

Nothing has changed on that front... a raptor related rumour has never come out of Toronto.

that said, if he does leave, i wouldnt worry because we can always fill the void with Aaron Baynes and Alex Len. granted, maybe ive been reading too much TO media

Kawhi made it clear he was LA bound. Which is why teams shied away for trading him. There was no stopping him. Serge and Gasol could have been retained if the price was right. But why bother? This team needs to get younger. Indeed Toronto will always have challenges though. Due to the border and cold winters.

really dount he leaves for another franchise unless they offer somethign ridiculous like option to get stakes in the franchise. Hes got owners that let him spend, got a good team with a great staff all around. where exactly does he go that isnt a dumpster fire lol

We need an ad campaign on the benefits of borders and cold winters among other hidden attributes.
