This move doesn't make much sense to me at this point. As far as the season goes, I guess we go forward with Triano. Is this really the ideal situation? I think the only truly appropriate time to fire a coach is between seasons. At this point we are stuck with an assistant coach as a head coach. I like triano but he isn't an NBA head coach. I would be surprised now if we got out of the first round of the playoffs, let alone being competitive in the conference (which I think was the goal at the start of the season).

This is now a lost season, with hope of hiring a decent coach in the offseason. I feel like this was completely a case of scapegoating the coach without really looking at the big picture. To me this is Colangelo's first major mistake...

Charlie Rosen chimes in

But there's another reason why Mitchell was dismissed, and it has to do with the identity of his replacement.

Jay Triano is Canadian-born, coached his country's national team from 1998 to 2004 with considerable success, has been affiliated with the Toronto organization for the past seven years, and has been overtly and covertly angling for the Raptors head coaching job for quite some time. And because of his citizenship, Triano is also the people's choice.

Coaches don't last long in this league where the best players make a third of the cap, so Smitch's ability to survive as long as he did in his first chance bodes well for his future.

When JO was acquired, you could tell that Sam's days were numbered. The expectations of JO and BC meant that someone in the middle was getting pinched. When team's achieve a certain level, they need more than someone to motivate them to play hard, because everyone's playing hard, so it comes down to strategy, and it was no secret that we were missing that.

Man, if only Jamario showed up this year...

Charley Rosen is a **** moron with no clue about anything Raptor related, let alone anything inside the organization. What "angling" is he **** talking about? He's just a massive, massive douchebag who wrote a book about Phil Jackson.

I'm sure that with a new coach our terrible defense will become amazing. Jose should now be able to stay in front of people. Kapono will stop pump fake/travelling and just shoot it. Anthony Parker will play at the level he did two years ago. JO will stay healthy. Moon will look motivated. Roko will make jumpshots. Solomon will become a dependable backup. Bargs will be consistent because Jose will now pass the ball to him a lot. Bosh will keep being a beast. I believe in miracles.

At this point I think we'll be in a dog fight to make the play-offs, never mind win a round. I can't see Philly sucking this badly for too long and the Knicks seem to have new life under D'Antoni and will benefit from the Marbury mess eventually getting cleared up.

Triano's one of those sinister Canadians though! Damn illegal aliens, out to steal our jobs.

Don't flatter yourself Nugget fan. There is a conspiracy theory that our players had a secret meeting the day of and collectively decided to play like they did so that Smitch gets the boot.

But gotta give it to you guys...you sure as hell didn't disappoint and came through hahahaha! I mean, you were jacking it from everywhere on the floor and it felt like you guys couldn't miss.hahahaha! Well At least that's till half way through the third period when I stopped watching.

My point exactly. Really what does this move do for the raptors. This is the type of move a team does when they are sitting in last place in the conference and are hoping to shake things up in the offseason. A ver suspect move for a team that had high expectations going into the season.

Our ceiling now seems to be making the playoffs... this is a huge disappointment. Sam with all his faults cared about winning and inspired his team to play hard game in game out. Now its a lost cause.

Congrats to all the haters that got their way.

victor page wrote:Who cares how much Sam is owed - it doesn't count against the cap. Trust me MLSE can spare the money.

Awesome news about Triano - I know tons of NBA teams were dying to hire him as their head coach. I hear he turned down the Lakers job before they landed on Phil Jackson a few years back.

Whether or not MLSE can "spare the money" to me seems irrelevant. This is still a business and regardless of how much money the organization has at its disposal, it is not fiscally responsible to sign a coach long-term and then release him owing him large sums of money. I have said it before and I will say it again, MLSE is majority owned by the OTPP whose major focus is to make money. That is why, IMO, it is important to discuss how much money we owe, regardless of its affect (or lack thereof) on the cap.

So the Raps lost 9 games due strictly to the inherent flaws of the players? Interesting.

Yes. Talented, multidimensional players win basketball games. Players with extreme flaws don't.

Then I think the Raps should not hire a new coach and just save the money to go into the luxury tax instead.

Okay, we'll have a player-coach. Jose can do the job, in addition to his gatorade duties.
