I really hate unclear nonsense writing like this.If a trade with the Phoenix Suns for Kevin Durant doesn't end up happening, league sources tell ClutchPoints they have other targets in mind. The Raptors have demonstrated interest in acquiring Kings guard Malik Monk in a potential trade, with that interest dating back at least to February's trade deadline.
The Kings weren't actively shopping their marquee players then. But the team is now under new management. The extent to which GM Scott Perry is actually willing to deal any of Sacramento's marquee players is unknown.
League sources say the Kings have been listening to trade offers from other teams. But that could be Perry simply gathering intelligence on his new roster. The Durant trade saga playing out will allow other pieces of the NBA offseason to fall into place. If Sacramento decides that trading Monk could potentially serve them best long term, they'll have at least one suitor for him in Toronto.
Perry, because of his time with the New York Knicks, has preexisting relationships with at least two Raptors. Barrett and Quickley could be worth monitoring as part of any potential return in a deal for Monk. One question remains paramount in any hypothetical, though. Do the Raptors think that Monk is the ‘significant roster upgrade' they'd trade one of the two former Knicks for?
RJ for Monk isn't even a near salary match either, so it doesn't make much sense unless the Kings are including JV or Ellis/Carter
Perry wants IQ. He wants a PG and had him in NY

Suns should take that and run

RaptorPride wrote:If KD goes to the Rockets and Suns don't want Jalen Green. Would you guys do RJ + some extra for Green? RJ to Suns and Green to Raps. Since no one really wants RJ here.

That's a lot and will for sure get the deal done. Me personally I'm not a fan of going for old superstars. I just don't think you can win a ring with them. Hopefully we don't give up the pick if we have to include all of them. Rather give like next year top 3 protected.

That is an impossible offer to the Suns directly. It would have to involve a third team because the Suns can’t take on more money than they send out. So likely we would be receiving more than Durant back in the trade too. For example if Yak and Demar went to the Suns, Durant, Monk and Val came to the Raps and I Q and RJ went to the Kings. I hated the idea of this Durant business but imagine a team receiving Demar, Yak and a 1st for their superstar again. Too entertaining not to do it

Barrett > Green

What’s clear is that the Raptors are trying to build a solid roster and they understand they need a scorer and that RJ isn’t a long term option.
I still think RJ is in the [relatively] long term plans here, I think there's a reason he was included in the OG deal instead of picks. I'd be surprised if he was traded for anything less than an All-Star calibre player.
I think the "toxic asset" quote that got aggregated after the trade really shaped a lot of perception of him and doesn't match how he's played at all in Toronto. I don't see any reason he won't fit with this core, and I think he's primed to take another leap this season
I don’t think he’s a negative player anymore but he is due for a contract extension soon and we know who he is. The Raptors will need to fix their roster somehow and imo there are other players who fit better than RJ on the team, especially with the addition of Ingram who’s a better version of a scorer.
I personally don’t think they’ll end up getting a star for RJ other than due to the requirement of his contract to make salaries match. Now maybe, and hopefully, a young team appreciates him (like a Portland) and is willing to give up assets for him, like their first round pick in 2025, but you’re right that they wouldn’t just trade him if it doesn’t bring in a better fit around Barnes and Ingram.
