I'm back on the Maluach train!

I kept saying all season that his stock would rise again during the combine when teams will be reminded that he can actually shoot.

If Mal is taken before 7 it’s gonna be crazy to see who drops to us.
2019 Eastern Conference All Stars

Derozan
Lowry
Ibaka
Valanciunas
Van Vleet
Delon Wright
Lebron
Embiid

There are only 2 teams in the league that rank in the top 6 in offensive and defensive efficiency: the Golden State Warriors and the Toronto Raptors.

My guess is any two of Fears, Tre, Queen.

I've been tiering prospects this year based on their current or reasonably projectable ability to be a positive in three areas

1) Defense
2) On-Ball Scoring
3) Off-Ball Scoring

For instance, Cooper can already do all three so he's in his own tier. There is a reasonable pathway for Harper and VJ to do all three so they are in my second tier. Then, there is a group of guys in my second tier in no particular order:

Jakucionis (2,3)
Fears (2,3)
Bailey (1,3)
Maluach (1,3)
Bryant (1,3)

I would take any of these guys (based on team need) over the following:

Queen (2)
Knueppel (3)
Johnson (3)
CMB (1)

My top two targets if we don't get a top three pick would be Maluach and Carter Bryant. Maluach would be my first choice since he's in the same tier but has an easier pathway to minutes/development.

Cooper Flagg
Dylan Harper
VJ Edgecombe
Ace Bailey

The draft starts at the #5 pick and Khaman Maluach could easily be the first player chosen after these top 4 prospects.
Raptors record prediction: 45-37 (6th place in the East)

He’s still not my favourite but I can’t for the life understand how some people can’t see the potential and completely write him off despite being the starting C who anchored Duke’s defence and the scouts almost unanimously rank in the top 10 which they didn’t for guys like Missi, Bol etc so obviously there is SOMETHING that the experts see in him. Of course so much of getting the most outta his potential is gonna be determined by WHERE he lands and it goes without saying if there’s any place that will have a great (actually likely THE best) chance to develop him to that point is here.

I’ll be perfectly happy with any of Queen, Fears, Maluach and Bryant still feels a bit like a honourable mention/good fallback. But I think we can develop each of those 3 to all-stars with the first 2 being more likely.

Let's say we land at 3 or 4.

Are you taking Ace or Queen? Who's your choice

Top 4 has been consistent all season long. No one's taken that #4 spot from VJ.

Queen fits how we play with a C with the ball in his hands at the top of the key. Maluach doesn't.

But Maluach has the size and defense that Queen doesn't. And given we are likely to re-sign Yak, either can learn from Yak for 4 years...and hopefully at some point, replaces him.

But do either have star upside?

Maluach looks a lot better there, than he did during the tournament. I thought he looked rushed whenever he had a defender on him under the basket and his hands didn't look soft at all. He kind of reminded me of OG whenever he had the ball in his hands. I trust whatever Masai decides at this point. He looks great in that workout.

FWIW I see Queen having more star upside than Malauch - but I also see Khaman having the higher floor. Won't rule out either becoming an All-Star but one has a more clear path than the other. Saying this as someone who would be thrilled with either one at 7-9.

I also think it's worth mentioning KM's role in Duke was very strict and you didn't see him doing a lot of the things he was capable of like, say, during the Olympics.

Let's just win the 1st overall pick, and we won't have a decision to make

If Toronto were to get the #4 pick and Cooper Flagg, Dylan Harper and VJ Edgecombe were already selected, who would you prefer as our pick?

Ace Bailey
Khaman Maluach
Derik Queen
Kon Knueppel
Jeremiah Fears
Tre Johnson
Jase Richardson
Kaspars Jakucionis
Raptors record prediction: 45-37 (6th place in the East)

I think you gotta swing on potential and go with Ace.

Maluach for me. I have more faith in Khaman shooting threes one day than Ace becoming a better driver/decision maker
