People may not agree but here is what I find with Scottie.

If he gets a string of possessions where he is aggressive when he gets the ball, the ball will come back to him more quickly. I find when he starts deferring to much (not shooting) he gets looked off because a teammate may think what is the point if he is going to do nothing-- you might disagree with that attitude from a teammate (and I'm not a fan of it) but I think that is part of it.
