Because the Raptors must get the draft rights to the player Memphis wants at 37 before trading those rights to them to complete the deal. Also, I'm sure Memphis wouldn't want the teams that draft after 37 to know that they are actually on the clock at 37 for fear that they would trade up in from of them to draft their player.

Incorrect. Once Memphis makes the pick the deal can happen. Memphis has a general idea of who would be available IMO, they are making the deal for financial reasons not because they want a certain player at #37. I'm sure they have a list of guys they like

I fully understand Memphis' financial reasons for doing the deal. That doesn't mean they won't have a preferred player at the time pick 37 is ready to be made. And Memphis can't trade the player taken for the Raptors at 20 until it is determined whose draft rights they are being traded for (ie. the player taken at 37)

Over/under that they go on commercial when it's the Raps pick?

Commercial right after the pick. No talking head analysis, as usual.

What happened with the Grizzlies trade?

Post#749 » by |llsT oNe » Fri Jun 27, 2014 1:16 pm

I get that Masai wanted Ennis but when that fell through wouldn't Shabazz have been a nice consolation at 22?

I guess he wasn't enamoured by Napier at all, or Riley's death threats scared him of as well.

Masai wanted Bruno and Ennis - the trade was to make sure he got both.

Once Ennis was gone, I guess he didn't feel it was worth it.

the guys he wanted were ennis, harris and bruno, when two of them were gone, no need for the grizz pick.

Still seems foolish to me.

What's the downside of another asset? Even if for Anderson, Hinkie would have been all over that.

I trust Masai more than I trust Bill Simmons. The pick is off the radar for these basketball journalists, but was it off the radar for the rest of the scouts and GMs? People hate what they don't know or understand. I thought Silver was botching Clint Capela or Shabazz Napier's name when the selection was announced...but after seeing Bruno's freakish body...I can see why there is interest, and why Masai like a couple other GMs were keeping this low key. Remember how Giannis ' draft stock was surging leading right up to his selection last year? Could have been Bruno if one or more scouts for the few that knew him raved about him.

I understand that everyone has their idea on who the Raptors should have drafted but that's only based on what we have seen...which might be very little compared to real basketball minds and scouts who watch these kids for a living. Most of the guys taken in the bottom third of the draft never pan out anyways...and some lottery picks that are so highly touted by media and scouts end up busting hard as well...so who's opinion in the media really means anything at all?

I'm thinking that when the Raptors failed to draft a decent PG, they decided to go with plan B and re-sign GV, which meant that they weren't willing to take on Prince's salary.

I'm completely happy if we re-sign Lowry, Patrick and GV, and supplement the roster with draftees who (eventually) will have a prayer of guarding Lebron and KD. That's still a good team, significantly better than this year assuming organic growth from the existing young guys.
