1 pt from the bench, 4th qtr fatigue sets in. Relying on starters too much without a legit backup PG.

Same thing happened 2 years ago the coaches think Nemhard is the next chris paul or something when he is only a decent prospect no wonder Sharpe didn't come back its always just the Houston , Nemhard show with these coaches

Respectable score, Canada just doesn't have the depth that the Americans do.
I feel pretty good about a 6 point loss to the powerhouse though. The future of Canadian hoops is bright.

It's really too bad that Shaedon Sharpe and Josh Primo weren't playing. That would have helped solve Canada's depth issues, kept other players fresh, and given the team more offensive options when shots weren't falling for the other guys.
I really wonder if this would have played out differently if Canada had those two guys.
Still, a decent effort. Hopefully Canada can keep their heads in the tournament and come back and beat the loser of France/Serbia to finish 3rd.

Yeah, not disappointed with the result.
I just feel like the argument when we lose to worse teams (senior national team included) is that we dont have the continuity/chemistry other teams have. But then we play the US who in theory have the same issues but their ball movement is better than ours.

Re: U19 World Cup Preview: Team Canada featuring Elijah Fisher, Caleb Houstan, Ben Mathurin, and more
Just came back home and had finally had a chance to watch the game. No point in writing too much about it now. I'll leave what I have to say till it's all said and done (tomorrow, 9:00 vs. Serbia).
Can just say that there's a slight sense of a miss, but not too much. Eventually, this is a much deeper US team and it made the difference with the intensity and guys from the bench contributing well vs. us getting only 1 point from our bench.
On the positive side, we once again show good resiliency, coming back from minus 15 to minus 1 and then again from minus 20 to minus 6 to close the game.
Anyway, no point dwelling about it. We're fighting for the bronze tomorrow and if we get it, we're going to come out of this tournament with an overall good feeling.
One last effort boys!

Final 4 teams are accurate representation of the global talent source currently. Bronze medal is a solid finish. Edey was the player of the tournament for Canada. Gave them a unique advantage. Other guys had their moments but very inconsistent. 3 pt shooting was a weakness. People should be happy with the result but not satisfied.

Re: U19 World Cup Preview: Team Canada featuring Elijah Fisher, Caleb Houstan, Ben Mathurin, and more
My goodness what a game , some of the best and some of the worst of Canadian basketball on display. What a shame it wasn't on air. Hopefully this is the last time this happens as Sportsnet is taking over the package from Dazn.
For Canada basketball winning is not necessarily the end goal of this event which can make life difficult on the more passionate fans. Rather they want to develop players for the future of the national program. They want guys to go there, enjoy the camaraderie and atmosphere and leave with a positive feeling about the program. Screaming and yelling at the players as the Serbian coach displayed is frowned upon. As for the players they most often want a venue to enhance their draft status and professional ambitions , sometimes walking the line between this factor and winning can be difficult. With Canadian teams we often see individual attainment offensively trump cohesive team play.
In the end our superior talent and athleticism won the day. It certainly wasn't easy , as poor shot selection and hero ball almost sunk us ( see Caleb Houstan 0-8 from three ). Finally the coaching staff took off the kid gloves and demanded some accountability ( done I'm sure in a polite Canadian way ). I was angry enough after about 5 minutes of the third quarter to jump in my car and drive down to New Mexico and find Paul Weir and to inquire if he was merely a camp counselor or an actual basketball coach? In the end he coached it up.
- got Houstan to stop jacking up dubious three's.
- Started to mix and match a bit of zone, especially with Edey out there.
- Dropped Bediako from the rotation and went 5 small for awhile.
- Put Fisher ( Lou Dort Junior ) onto the their big star Jovic and generally increased the defensive intensity and we then got some easy buckets out of transition. I was underwhelmed by Jovic, he can really score , but his lack of footspeed was glaringly exposed as well as being a somewhat petulant cry baby.
- Weir also finally went 4 small down the stretch for the first time in the tourney with Houstan at the 4 , which really gave us some good dribble drive penetration opportunities.
In the end our superior talent and especially run and jump athleticism, taking it to the rim coupled with intense defensive pressure just took over the game. Also we saw "last 5 minute Nebs" on display once again. The kid certainly doesn't shrink from the limelight. I thought our two best player were Mathurin and Edey in this game as we started to share the ball a bit better. Benny showed his good shot making and explosiveness that I'm sure had the NBA scouts taking notice. Zach gave us an interior level of toughness that we've never had against the Serbs before.
In the end I hope the kids enjoyed themselves and are willing to contribute to the program in the future. Too bad we didn't get to play the French and see who is really better. If we'd ever get our crap ( read preparation level ) better at the senior national team level this is the future of basketball on display for the next 10 years . The Yanks, Canucks and Les Blues are the are the three most powerful countries in the world currently at developing talent. Well done Canada.

And note the massive shoulder width difference between Edey & the other 2 tall guys. Thats a major factor, its why certain players can easily power through others.
