It's true. If your priorities in life are to hang out with socialites and pad your Instagram follower count, you are shallow and ignorant. Athletes spend their entire lives training for the sport. They don't have time to become cultured. Guys like Giannis are a rarity. Most players will flock to LA or NY at the first opportunity (again, the media helps herd them there as well).
