I said it before and I'll say it again, the WNBA is better off in a smaller town/city with no sports teams within a 200km radius. Establish a team in Winnipeg, Regina, Ottawa, Halifax, wherever. Towns that have no basketball, but will spend money on a game to support a couple of sports teams in their cities. Small towners will treat the brand like its family. Torontonians are brand whores. The only reason why this became a subject was because Drake brought it up. A big brand name in the US.

The entire strategy of the WNBA is messed up. They have teams established in cities with major league teams in every sport. Relocate to sport hungry towns, and your attendance will skyrocket.

The feminists mostly dont GAF about the WNBA. The eyes are always on the big boys club.

WNBA would be an easy success here. Trying to use the US market for any real gauge for how it'd go here is so fn stupid, it hurts my head.

The women's game is growing year-by-year and the timeframe in which the season is held (may-august) would generate lots of interest here since it doesn't conflict with the Raps/Leafs and would be a solid third to the Jays/TFC during the spring/summer months.

Hope it happens soon!

I'd go to games in the summer if I was in town. Might watch a bit on TV. I really like the idea. To those saying it should only be in small towns, understand that the current structure of the league is to run in the offseason and only when the NBA isn't playing. Not much spill over so doesn't have to be in smaller towns. The idea of a WNBA team in Ottawa is funny. Wouldn't work.

We don't have a NFL team, no way you say that if we were getting one. The point to getting a WNBA team is because we don't have one.

The NBA is pretty popular in Canada and especially the Raps and many people also play basketball, but all that doesn't mean it will translate into these same people tuning into WNBA games. How many years have people said that women's hockey is growing and gaining popularity and yet its still the same as it is like 10-20 years ago. I doubt the WNBA will do any better here.

I'll be the first to admit I'm wrong if it does well, but I doubt it. Maybe if women and girls really take to a Toronto WNBA it might do OK, but considering most women don't follow sports and those that do usually follow men's sports, I'll be surprised if they don't take losses like the rest of the WNBA does.

Womans basketball is big in Ontario right now, basketball from elementary all the way up to the collegiate level, is big right now. Those parents along with their children are going to support it. Basketball fans are going to support it. Plus it's in the summertime, it's 100% going thrive here.

We have the CBL + CBEL here growing, the WNBA is going to thrive here with corp backing. It's another advertising stream for several companies.

Basketball is cheaper too participate in than hockey. I wouldn't compare the two.

I doubt how many of them will actually go out and buy tickets to a WNBA game and go consistently for a whole season like they would a Raptors or Leafs games. There's tons of females playing basketball in the US too aren't there? Probably millions and yet not even a fraction of them care to go to WNBA games there either or even tune in consistently to watch those games on TV. If they did in any significant numbers then the WNBA wouldn't be losing money since it came into existence and require never ending funding from the NBA.

It's not even a question of women's sports, necessarily. Soccer participation rates in the U.S. are pretty high all the way up to the collegiate levels and it's a pretty cheap sport to play. Still, a pro league like MLS has made very little headway to breaking into the big-4 leagues. Compare that to say, NASCAR. I don't know anybody that races at any level - does anyone? Doesn't matter, tons of people watch.

MLS soccer is doing just fine, great actually.

A baseball game the other day had like ~500 fans in the seats...

Depends on your definition of "fine". MLS TV deal is less than $100M annually - individual teams get that in baseball.

As long as the wnba team can self sustain and not take anything away from the Raptors (assuming its the same ownership group), I'm all for it.

Are you talking about Oakland with the 500 fans? If yes, that team's owner is openly talking to Las Vegas to move them there and never spends money to compete. On top of that they play in a terrible stadium built for multipurpose. This is the closest thing to the Montreal Expos.

I don't blame them.

If anything, a trash org like the Oakland As receiving nearly as much TV revenue as all of MLS before a single ticket is sold shows how good the economics for baseball are.

Yup - NFL/NBA/MLB are no longer gate driven leagues. However, you want a good market to maximize revenues. This is a massive difference vs the 80s and 90s where ticket sales were a large portion of revenues.

MLS on the other hand is still very much ticket driven as that's the overwhelming largest piece of their team's revenues.

No it wouldn't. I caught a Sparks game the other day. The stadium was literally empty. It was embarrassing. The best part was DeRozan bringing his daughter to the game. She actually fell asleep during the game. It was funny.
