Norm has always had more to work with than gtj which is why at the time of the trade I said gtj had less potential. That being said, all I hope for with gtj is he starts hitting his 3s at 40%. He's never gonna be a dynamic playmaker, he just has to be an automatic open shot maker. Especially now with Scottie running the point, he's gonna be dishing to him a lot and encouraging him to shoot so he needs to be more consistent. Also can't be a black hole when he gets the ball and needs to play within the team concept more.

Norm didn’t live up to his potential then because they are largely the same player.

Norm for gtj was a fair trade then and in hindsight still is.

Norm was a 6moy candidate last season, we'll see if Gary ever comes close to that

And Gary had a season close to most steals per game

Norm today is a more efficient and a way more refined offensive player. The way he attacks is very different from GTJ. But GTJ is much younger and has some years to get there. Fair trade, but it you're a championship team, you easily take Norm over GTJ today.

Absolutely thats true a contender takes norm over gtj. But also nite that norms defense has become very bad. It was never great but its worse now. Gtj can be very disruptive on that end.

Trent is really not a great defender either.

Again, let's just hope trent can come close to the efficiency of powell. He'll never have the same game, he doesn't have the same finishing ability, explosiveness and first step that powell has. So like I said the hope is that he just becomes more consistent with his catch and shoot game. Norm was automatic from the corners, I would like Trent to be that type of shooter. The age thing doesn't matter because again different physical tools.

To be fair Norm at age 24 was a 5.5 49TS% guy. GTJ was 17.4ppg on 56TS% at the same age.

I think we forget how young GTJ is, and how long it took Norm to be who he is now.

GTJ actually started the majority of his games. Norm only started 8 games last year. GTJ started 44 games and 69 games the year before.

GTJ has actually been the more impactful player out of the two but if people want to say they’ve been equal, that’s fine too. Fact of the matter is both have the same glaring weaknesses. One just happens to be 6 years younger.

The question is, if you put Gary on the Clips where he wouldn't start either, would he be as impactful as Norm was this season. I don't think so, as a couple posters mentioned, a contender would take Norm over Gary. But yes I hope Gary with youth on his side can still improve.

In 2021-22, Luke Kennard got 6th man of the Year votes while playing Norm’s role. Other players to receive votes the past couple of years include Harrell, Portis, Oubre, Clarke, Tyus. Not exactly elite company.

Would a contender take Norm over GTJ? A team already dumped Norm for expiring contracts and Norm was being actively shopped at the deadline just 6 months ago. Doesn’t seem like any team wants to actually keep Norm.

I like Norm and I am thrilled he’s been able to carve out a career in this league. He’s worked extremely hard. But he has some serious flaws that he’s been unable to fix. GTJ just so happens to have those same flaws. GTJ might have time to fix them though. If not, we just replaced Norm with another Norm.

Norm is clearly better than GTJ lol.

We traded for GTJ because of his potential upside but so far, he’s been largely the same player since his bubble appearance in Portland.

Thats why it was a fair trade. Norm isnt impactful enough for a team that's retooling and discovering what they are. Trent jr jas flashed as an impactful offensive and defensive player that you hope can develop into something that is consistent. Ppl on here really want to ignore how bad norm is on defense. Im not saying trent is that good but he has flashed an entire year of being an absolute menace on that end (steals)

You raised an interesting side point about the quality of recent 6th man contenders. I looked up the list of the award winners and first 10 years or so, starting in 82, were either HOF players or other truly great players. More recently Ginobili was another great player in the role. But of late there's been a number of fairly pedestrian talents like Kennard.

And all the deflections. Top 5 in both in 2021-22. People underestimate the amount of extra points that can generate.

Norm is a good athlete but it’s so odd how bad he is on the defensive end. He just doesn’t have good awareness on that end nor the quick hands to be a disruptor. There were rumours that Nurse was frustrated with Norm and wanted someone who could better play his style of basketball.

Norm has really developed into an efficient shooter though. He’s found his niche and can get to his spots on the floor and guys are able to find him. Most of his points are assisted. He’s not developing a lot for himself but he doesn’t need to.

Honest question, has Norm ever started for a playoff team? GTJ started 69 of 70 games for a team that won 48 games in 2021-22. Most games Norm started was in Tampa and our team was awful. The following year Portland was terrible and he got traded. Last year, Norm barely started any games and the team hovered around .500 all year.
