Kyle Lowry

Post#1 » by Ackshun » Wed May 19, 2010 6:43 pm

Would you want him in a Raptor's uniform?

He's a RFA this year. and the consensus over at that Rockets board is, anything up to the MLE will be matched to retain his services. In my opinion, he's worth more than that.

Doesn't hurt he also plays for a team that is looking to add a certain homegrown Power Forward to the mix, that also holds a lottery pick most of us are interested in.

2010 stats : 24 MPG / 9PPG / 4.5 AS / 3.6 RPG

per 36: 13.5 PPG / 6.7 AS / 5.4 RPG

Some positives:
Great defender
gets into the paint "like an NFL RB" <--taken from draft scouting report
Great rebounding instincts
Penetrates with explosiveness
Young (24), with potential to improve long range J, as well as work on mid range consistency

A few negatives:

Will have to offer good money on an offer sheet
Less than stellar 3 pointer shooter
Turnover prone

If one of Jack/Jose are let go, sure. He's too short to play the off-guard position and although he can penetrate and break down defenses at will - Jack is still the better player imho.

What a pointless thread. Out of all the players who are UFA/RFA you pick Lowry? C'mon, we have approx 20 million dollars committed to the PG spot. GTFO

Love him and his tenacity. Could be an under the radar move. Regardless of us doing a sign and trade involving Bosh i would still throw the MLE at him on July 1st and then figure out what do do with the PG jam. He has great defensive and rebounding ability and loves to get into the pain. His pasing is solid and should improve on his shooting. I think he has solid BBall IQ as well. Banks should be easily movable as he is expiring. Jack should stay as his contract is a steal for what he produces. I would send Jose for TJ and then use TJ's expiring to net other players.

Over the next two years, we are likely to change significantly at the PG spot. We need speed, because a couple of the best young point guards have landed in the East. (Think Wall, Rose) and their trademark is speed and athleticism. Guys like Jack and Jose won't cut it if we're to become a top 4 team, so they will work their way out of the system.

Until they do, we have to restrain ourselves and look for the PG of the future, and Lowry is just a decent backup.

+1, don't forget about Jennings. The trending is obvious. Hopefully we get in on the action in next year's draft.

I'm not saying we should go after Lowry or not, but remember BC made a point of saying he'd be looking into moving one of our PG's ( we assume he meant Calderon or Jack) and Banks is an expiring.
It's not unreasnable to assume that 2 of (Banks, Jack, Calderon) will be gone at some point this season. If it's Banks and Jose that departs, that leaves us JJ's 2010 salary of 4.86 million. Either way, it's obvious that there will be alot of movement in that area over the next calendar year.

I think the point is that we shouldn't go out and commit >MLE money to a backup when we're very much in need of a new-age starting point guard.

meh...if we're gonna have a back up might as well keep Jack and draft a young PG. No need for Lowry.

I've wanted him since he was on the Grizzlies. He plays D, he works hard and he is a strong player.

Not sure how he'd fit though.

If you directed that at me, that's why I mentioned in my post that I wasn't necessarily suggesting we pursue Lowry. I was simply pointing out that our current logjam at pg, personel-wise and financially, is about to get alot thinner over the next few weeks, months, (year at the most).

I don't know what BC has in store for the roster over the upcoming weeks/months, but if I analyze the way things stand now, I'd prefer to bring in a young stud PG (probably through the draft) and pair him up with someone like Jack. If we don't pick up one this year, Jack can hold the fort until next off-season, when I assume we'll have a higher pick and more options available to us. Of course, if we could somehow manage to pull off a trade for someone of Collison's ilk that would be superb, but I find that to be highly improbable.

BC has stated his wish to solidify the PG position. I'm assuming we lose Jose or Jack. Both are backups. One would back up Lowry if I was the General Manager.

Is Lowry NOT an upgrade on Jose, Jack, or Banks ?

He is not a starting caliber PG, because he cannot shoot.

Honest question.
Do you envision Kyle Lowry as a core piece to help build a foundation for a NBA championship contending team? I see him as more of a back-up or maybe even a tweener.

We do not even have any cap space to sign players for more then MLE, so why are you even suggesting we should go over MLE to sign him

Houston fans love him. But yeah, probably a backup on most teams.
