I think they are playing a bit of a dangerous game. Putting a lot of pressure on him to step up into a role that usually takes years to accomplish. Hopefully he responds well, rather than poorly to such pressure.

But seriously, I think Bargnani is a bit too controversial within the fan base. I suspect a lot of people wouldn't be interested in spending their hard-earned money watching a team with him as the featured player. Otoh, DeMar is a bit more of a clean slate you can use to market the team. Plus he is athletic, young, and has tantalizing upside. More difficult to make those sorts of arguments with Bargs to your typical consumer, I'd guess.
