Feschuk: BC extension coming soon

Aside from stating the obvious - Raptors need stars - he says BC's extension is close

http://www.thestar.com/sports/basketbal ... ast-decade

Anybody who knows Colangelo knows he thinks of himself as a basketball guy, first and foremost, and the CEO job isn’t currently on his wish list. And while he has failed to build a winner, save for that 47-victory campaign in his 2006-07 honeymoon phase, those who know the way Colangelo is viewed in the MLSE boardroom will tell you that he is appreciated for his swing-for-the-fences approach to deal-making. (Even if Colangelo’s would-be home runs, and we’re thinking of Jermaine O’Neal and Hedo Turkoglu, turned into weak groundouts, the buzz those moves created helped the sales staff move product).

With Colangelo’s contract extension expected to be consummated in the near future, you can expect pre-trade-deadline action, although the Raptors aren’t exactly dealing from a position of strength.

Colangelo has millions in a trade exception he acquired in Bosh’s exit, which he’s hoping to use before it expires. And he has Reggie Evans’s expiring contract which, if Evans could get healthy, could theoretically fetch something of value. And certainly Colangelo will continue to speak positively about the chances of squeezing into the playoffs in a top-heavy Eastern Conference.

I have no problem with that. The man can draft talent.

Good move imo.

He's pretty much the face of the franchise at the moment.

I'm OK with this. I like the way BC learns from his mistakes. He is finally building with young talent. I'm sure not having to appease Bosh has a lot to do with it.

Yes, miss playoffs for 3 straight years = contract extension.
The team has no all-stars, and in worse shape then he inherited = contract extension.

Just business as usual in MLSE. No wonder we don't win anything.

Like a lot of people in this thread already stated, I have no problem/beef with his extension.
BC is finally building this team around youth and for the future, so I'd like to see him continue to do so.
Also, not having Bosh around helps this youth movement tremendously, he's not looking for a quick fix to keep Bosh happy anymore and this fact alone gives him a lot of room to mold this team as he sees fit.

I think Colangelo has learned from his stupidity...

He finally used the word "rebuild" the other day... Hes aware that the defense needs
to be addressed eg. going after Chandler, Diaw, & Barnes trading Marco for Julian. He
knows we need a Center tried to get Dampier and Chandler.

And hes a good drafter....

He just needs to stop spending money like a woman and he did build a winner just look
at Miami.

Anyways im ok with giving him a second chance because I think he gets it now.

Are you kidding?

How many unathletic white SF's has he signed in the last 4 years?

The guy has continually overpaid and given longterm contracts to mediocre players...

Seriously...

Learns from his mistakes?

I'd prefer a GM who didn't make such obvious ones in the first place...

Makes no sense! He could very well be the worst gm in the league the past couple years.
I guess the euro/3pt shooting/no defense philosophy will be around for more years!

i think hes done a pretty poor job (especially with signings and trades) but im guessing there wouldn't be too many experienced general managers jumping to take the job so i guess im good with it.. he sure is better than Rob Babcock

I dont mind. As much as people want him gone, getting a GM with that much credentials, savvy and business sense is hard to come by. I dont think the Raptors can get anyone better, and having BC around still will build some continuity in a franchise that has practically become a revolving door.

I'd been holding out hope that we wouldn't bring him back, but I'm not at all surprised.
