Grange makes the case for BC, and mocks OTPP

We’d all have more confidence in MLSE if they’d recognized they wanted to fire Colangelo and had an alternative plan in place and made the move in December. That would suggest sports intellects in charge that could plot a clear path and execute.
But that never happened and instead there was the single person most closely identified with a $399-million asset and one of the most influential and respected figures in the sport giving a season-ending press conference qualifying nearly every answer with some version of “If I’m here” and listing his accomplishments like an MBA grad at a job interview: “In terms of passion for the business and dedication to the organization …I would hope people think I am the right guy.”
Those so eager to see Colangelo move on might want to give a some hard thought to what the Plan B might be.
And as the ping pong balls fall on May 17th and the Raptors end up sliding down instead of up in what is already projecting to be a very weak draft with top prospects opting for the shelter of school rather than the uncertainty of the locked-out NBA, don’t be surprised if Colangelo looks around and decides trying to convince the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan that he’s the right man for the job just isn’t worth a coke or a bag of chips, not for three bucks and a few million times more than that.

I respect Grange for stating his opinion, which is to keep BC.
For me, it comes down to BC trading Bargs before next season. Anything short of that means same old, same old.
I heard BC whining about how there were no deals for Chris Bosh. Then how is he going to get a deal for Bargnani? Where's his bar set?

I share the same mindset. Bargs has to go, I'm tired of this fence sitting. Get rid of him and let's move forward, the game isn't changing and volume perimeter scoring big men are not a necessity. From all of the smoke lately, I'm thinking BC has come to his senses somewhat.

The problem with your POV is that any GM, BC or a successor, might decide the best time to trade Bargnani is not now, but this summer or next trade deadline. Considering the uncertainty of the lockout, a lot of teams will likely play things very conservatively - unless they are dumping salary - until they know the new CBA terms.

The OTPP are clearly a bunch of penny counting morons. Dont let the door hit you on the way out OTPP!
Right now to want to go through a new GM in a time of uncertainty its just not a good move. You need an experienced hand that can walk the franchise through it. We clearly dont have any one lined up or even up there to do the job. Unless you want some hack accountant to run things.

The OTPP have GOT to gtfo... They have done nothing but ruin the leafs and raps. We need owners that want to win. Too much red tape with these bastards. They should take their pension and retire.

i think i read somehwere that mlse represents <5% of their entire portfolio yet is responsible for 90% of their headache

I think about 95% of the board can agree that BC's single biggest issue is the Bargnani situation. If he's willing to move Bargs this summer I'd love to have him back.
Can't argue with his last two draft picks, and I've been a fan of the athletic movement we've started during the last year and a half or so.

I thought Grange wasn't doing basketball anymore? I guess he's doing a few pieces while the Raps have some interesting issues going on. I agree, BC has quickly changed the direction we're taking and it seems that he's focused on getting athletic, tough players that don't need to be coddled. So far I'm pretty OK with our position considering the huge loss to our talent in Bosh leaving. I really hope he's back next year.

Only 16 posts for this thread even though this is a much important issue for the Raptors than what happens with Bargs.

I think the situation is quite absurd from the side of MLSE (or the OTPP in particular). The only reason we havent lost BC already is more than likely because he has some sort of assurance from LT that he is going to try everything he can to retain him. Thats just speculation on my part, but Grange is right when he says careful this guy may realize maybe this all isnt worth it and walks.

Hey Dagger - what is the probability you're going to make a thread dedicated to the Colangelo interview on TSN radio? Somehow you only make these threads when they're pro-BC
let me recap the interview for everyone.
Feschuk - You have to spend to win in this league. Look at the teams in the playoffs, most of them are luxury tax teams.
Colangelo - Yes but the NY Knicks spent 110 million/yr and haven't won a playoff game since 2001. You have to spend your money well.
Feschuk - You said NY, but what about Orlando, LA, Boston, Chicago they're all spending
Colangelo - We had a plan in place to spend a bit over the luxury tax if Chris Bosh accepted the 126 million $ extension. The board approved it.
Feschuk - Brian at your press conference today you said the team was fortunate they aren't stuck under an albatross max contract since they didn't resign Bosh. How can you say this morning you're lucky to not be stuck with his contract and now say that you wanted to give him 126 million $
