Raps looking to replace Maurizio Gherardini?

Post#1 » by Rhettmatic » Thu May 26, 2011 3:51 pm

From Ken Berger:

In other NBA front office news, the Raptors are assembling a list of candidates to work alongside assistant general manager Marc Eversley under team president Bryan Colangelo. Toronto is believed to be seeking someone with international scouting experience to replace Maurizio Gherardini, whose contract expires June 30.

Now, please, no arguments about Gherardini's job title. I'm begging you.

Looks like those rumours of Maurizio leaving might be true.

In all seriousness though, I have no idea what this guy does. I thought that when he came over we would have a definite advantage over other teams when it came to Euro prospects but we havent really tapped that well. I appreciate everything hes done for Canada basketball and hope he sticks around there but I have to say that I expected more.

This is pretty big news. I would have thought that the Raps would have resigned him along with Bryan. I wonder if this is Bryan's decision, or a decision made for him by the board of MLSE.

Thank God. We've been arguably the worst team these past few years in bringing in foreign talent. I don't care what his job title was, it was one of the major selling points for bringing him in to this organization.

Now if we can only get rid of Kelly...

I would say that he had impact initially with the signing of Jorge and Parker. However since then don't know what value he brought to the Raps.

It could also be that Gherardini was hoping that after 5 years, he'd have a crack at a GM job somewhere. Maybe he wants to go back to Europe?

I wonder who replaces him at Canada Basketball or does he still keep his position over there

PJ Carlesimo becomes the coach

I hope he keeps his position at Canada Basketball. Say what you want about his role with the Raps, he has brought stability to that program.

That would be pretty disappointing.

Berger says they want someone with international scouting experience, not clipboard-breaking experience, and Carlesimo has been pretty lousy as a head coach. But who knows.

I certainly could see BC offering Triano some kind of front-office position if he decides to hire a different coach.

Hmm. At least we will get his skills evaluating all of the Euros in this draft, although who knows how hard he'll be working if he knows he's getting let go 7 days after the draft. Part of me hoped that he would be around to do things like negotiate a buyout with Valanciunas, if we choose him.

About time they got rid of this guy. He honestly has brought in zero value.

All he has done over the past few years is sport GUCCI and PRADA apparel.

One less roadblock to move Bargnani

I was really excited when Gherardini came on board but he really didn't do much.....at least that was obvious to the fan base.

Ujiri seemed to do a lot more in a much shorter time period

Remember when Maurizio had a blog on Raptors.com?
Other than telling stories about Tony Parker and Boki Nachbar, I'm not sure what the point of it was... kind of like Maurizio's entire tenure here.
