Synopsis
After leading the USSR to a gold medal (and victory over the U.S.A.) at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Sarunas Marciulionis and Arvydas Sabonis were poster boys for their oppressor's sports machine. Four years later, after the fall of the Soviet Union, they emerged as symbols of democracy, helping their country break free from the shackles of Communism, and willing newly independent Lithuania to the medal stand at the Barcelona Olympics. "The Other Dream Team" documents the Lithuanians' experiences behind the Iron Curtain for 50 years, where elite athletes were subjected to brutalities of Communist rule. As they hid from KGB agents and feared for their lives, Lithuania's basketball stars always shared a common goal--to utilize their athletic gifts to help free their country.

Damn, I can't say that was the first inspirational montage to bring me to tears, but that was nice! Makes me proud to be a Raptors fan that we will have Lithuanians on our side.

I read about this movie on SLAMonline. I think Jonas only makes brief appearances in the intro and outro... Just like a "this is the future of Lithuania" or something like that.

I never really wanted to see this documentary, but I always loved its trailers. And I like first one much more, its cliche, but touching.

This has been done before.

Just replace the word "Lithuania" with the word "Croatia", and replace the word "USSR" with "Yugoslavia".

Croats like Kukoc, Petrovic, and Radja lead the Yugoslavian national team to win gold in 1990 in the World Championships, and then they won the silver medal with the newly independent Croatia at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, losing only to the original Dream Team.

Same story as the Lithuanians, but with a silver medal instead of a bronze. :)

Did anyone think of Magic Mike when they read the title?

For Croatians it was not even close as bad how for Lithuanians. Croatians could own cars, could travel abroad, could live pretty well. Lithuanians couldn't do that at all.

Also little known fact, that in Soviet Union a 1 liter vodka bottle was nicknamed Sabonis, because it was a tall bottle. :D

I've always found Bill Walton's attempted eloquence to be uncomfortably laboured and a bit offensive. It's like the guy is trying to make my eyes roll right out of my head.

I've been waiting for this to come out since like February... the date keeps getting pushed back. Hopefully it will finally be released in the "fall".
