Levien is making these deals based largely on the recommendations of John Hollinger, a statistician who worked for a cable sports company. The San Antonio Spurs once used him as a consultant and regretfully took his advice to sign a free agent named Jackie Butler. It was such a disaster, the Spurs had to attach Luis Scola to a trade to get Butler out of town.

I want Woj to run a team.

Hollinger thought Ed Davis was going to be a bust, too. I think he'll make more good moves than bad, though, as he doesn't seem like the kind of guy that's blinded by pride.

On the one hand, Hollinger made the Spurs give up Scola. OTOH he correctly predicted that they would ring whilst Dallas had 67 wins.

Scola forced the Spurs to trade him because they didn't have the money to bring him over. Yes, Butler sucked, but the Scola deal was more complicated than just the Spurs trying to save themselves from Hollinger's terrible deal (a 2-3 million dollar/year for 3 years deal for a 21 year old big man...hardly insane).

And Holt isn't the richest owner in the league.

That said the deal actually worked out well for SA, even though it meant starting Bonner as their 4 for quite a while.

Decision to trade Gay is because of money, Hollinger's got nothing to do with it. You could say he influenced the package of players received, but we'll never really know what else was on the table.

On a related note, I always shake my head when Woj finds a way to turn a story into a LeBron story.

We traded a player with one of the highest PERs on our team (18.1 at Davis). I think Hollinger had a small bit to do with it.

Right, because no other GMs have ever made mistakes.
The Butler signing (3 years $7M) was bad I guess, but so immaterial that it makes me think that Woj is going out of his way to bash Hollinger

Woj is just angry he's working for a reeling search engine company.

Well, Hollinger's fingers seem to be all over this trade as, for the life of me, I can't see any logic in Memphis wanting what they received other than some misguided use of PER. Ed Davis PER is as good as it is because of the team he was on; no post presence, no big rebounder, - in Memphis he will be playing with Zach Randolph or Marc Gasol and competing for minutes with Arthur - in other words he is completely redundant (unless the Grizz move Randolph (and then they would suck worse than the Raps). Tayshaun Prince is owed 17 million dollars - has been declining for two years - why him and not Jose (if you are just shedding salary) - Jose's PER not good enough?? - Doesn't make any sense on Memphis's part

It IS about shedding salary, they need Prince to replace Gay. Davis is a decent backup for now and maybe more once ZBo starts to age. They probably would've preferred a nice wing prospect for Gay, but I doubt anybody was offering that.

I dunno man, I think that'd be a fun job. Writing articles purely based on what you think should happen... and have fans rip you to shreds if you don't say anything that is remotely favorable of that said team.

Woj does not know nor care for 'skill' or 'metrics' or 'winning'

He is, however, the all-knowing, all-powerful NBA transactions guru who is never wrong about transactions.
