We need a 'brand' name GM

Count me off the Masai Ujiri bandwagon, i'm not a big fan of him. In reality, I think we need a big and marketable name who players/agents are familiar with just because of their history. Ideally, this would be an ex NBA player such as Larry Bird.
Who else is on the market that's an ex nba player?

You're describing...Bryan Colangelo.
Please replace "'brand' name" with "good"

Yeah I disagree. I think we need a GM who hides behind the scenes, not a guy who's the face of the franchise.

No we need a manager that can put together a good team. Nothing us really even matters.

You mean similar to how Michael Jordan is a "brand name" owner of the BobCats? You're overrating the effect that it will have on attracting players, coaches etc. Plus, it's not easy finding a good GM and by requiring them to be a "brand name" guy significantly shortens the list of potential GM candidates, making the probability of finding a good GM even lower.

The reason people don't want Masai is because he worked under Colangelo before. It doesn't mean they share the same opinions on things nor have the same mind for evaluating talent and such. He's also not going to have a deal on the works, ask Colangelo's opinion on it and do whatever he says. Ridiculous.

Man, that's like buying an expensive shirt to look good when what you really need is not to be so fat. And, that's been my complaint about what MLSE has been like the for a while. Trying to shortcut building a winner by buying a winner and making a loser out of him. - I aught to sig that.

I think Chuck is the guy. Seriously, Charles Barkley would bring good credibility to us. Not as a GM though, maybe assistant.

Id prefer a smart GM over a brand name GM myself.

we just ran a "brand name" GM out of town, no way we get as big of a name as Colangelo

I would say we need a heavy weight someone who knows what he is doing and has proven it more than anything (Donnie Walsh, L Bird, Jerry West). I'm astonished how many think Ujiri is our salvation when he has done this (GM & AGM) for a handful of years only.
Colangelo who is much more experienced and knowledgeable could not make in this market. Moreover, Ujiri was trained by Colangelo, why would he be able to do any better? And if so, how much better than BC is he going to be, what's his ceiling, play-offs, ECF, finals?
The media likes to create these nice story lines about how well Ujiri knows the Raptors organization and the importance of this connection, which to me sound nothing but absurd. We need a new guy in who does not know the organization who does not have personal relations within it, someone who will point out the flaws, someone who will bring something new to the table.
I think Ujiri did a fantastic job in Denver but personally I do not think he is the right person for this organization.

Bryan Colangelo was a 'brand' GM.
What we need is a smart, patient, forward thinking GM, whether that person is Ujiri or someone else.

Why isn't Ujiri a brand name? He's the guy with current success isn't he?
Is there another GM, young or old, who traded a superstar franchise player and remained a 50 win team?
If Ujiri stays in DEN is he going to have a hard time convincing players to take his money? I cannot imagine that to be the case. What other purpose would brand serve than to attract players? I think a lot of players would take the guy who is already accomplishing things over the old-timer with the bigger name who's jumping back in. Sure I'll take RC or Riley, but it's not like they're available to be had.
Now, I can buy the argument about it being very weird to keep BC around and bring Masai back, but I can't think of anything wrong with Masai's branding right now. I'd be very happy if we were the kind of team that groomed a young exec, then let him cut his teeth with the head job somewhere else, had success, and still chose to come back once the opportunity presented itself. That looks fantastic for the Raptors brand IMO.

Denver isn't exactly loaded with "big-name", fluff players like the type(s) Bryan goes after. I'd gladly take Uriji over him, as would anyone

People seem to forget that Bryan Colangelo was NOT the only guy who Ujiri worked under.

Only thing that would happen with this move is the Raptors going from terrible to turrable.

Forget Ujiri, but the Raps should aim for a Grand Slam of a hire. Throw a truck load of money to RC Buford of San Antonio. Make him an offer he can not refuse. Just make an attempt anyways, because he is a guy whose resume says it all. A brilliant basketball man with championships to boot. I know he is tied up right now, but after the Playoffs are done, MLSE should make the Olive Branch with permission to speak to him.
