The NBA issued new projections for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 salary cap and luxury tax thresholds. The 2014-15 salary cap is now projected to be $63.2 million and the tax level is projected to be $77.0 million. The numbers for 2015-16 are now projected to be $66.5 million and $81.0 million, respectively.

Where Does This Leave Us?

I expect Salmons & Hansbrough to be waived. I know some of you want to keep Hansbrough but not sure where he fits on the roster. If you draft a big man in the 2nd round and sign a big body backup C there really isnt a space for him unless Hayes is traded. So that leaves us with

42,447,826 (this number reflects Hansbrough & Salmons waived + our 1st round draft pick signed)

So that would leave us with around 21 million if Lowry, Patterson & Vasquez walk. If you sign all 3 you basically have zero cap room and would have to use the MLE to upgrade the wing spot off the bench. This is why i see Masai using Salmons & Hansbrough on draft day to acquire someone better than the MLE (ie Chandler, Green, etc). I think Lowry will get 11 million (maybe 10), Vasquez 4.5 (similar to Lou Williams contract), Patterson 4.5 (similar to Brandon Wright) leaving us with.

62,447,826 + both 2nd round picks needing to be signed.

we will be a good amount below the tax so taking on salary in trades shouldnt be an issue. There are possibilities of a S&T with one of the FAs being worked out (like Deng) where Cleveland may accept Fields + Novak in return for a 1st round pick (NYK 2016) so they get something back vs losing him for nothing. So i see the trade route as the only real way to go but were in a good position.

If we use the above figures of Lowry 11, Vasquez 4.5, Patterson 4.5 and base it off Larry Coons projections we should have more than max cap room next summer (around 44 million after factoring in our 2015 1st). That would leave us with 22.5 million in cap space. That will be the year to make a splash because the year after Ross & JV will be up for extensions.

Hansbrough is a great asset. No way I would wave him...in a long season...you need players like him...to do the dirty work for you...

He is a trade-able asset...why waive him...

Salmons...on the other hand...

because he doesnt have a role here and i would rather save the 2.3 million.

i agree i see him being used as trade bait on draft day but for a different reason. If you combine Salmons & Hansbrough you can take back more salary and allow a team to dump more salary on you in exchange for more assets. I dont see a team being extremely interested in Hansbrough and willing to send an asset to have him.

I don't think we waive Hansbro. At $3 million, that's an affordable contract and a potentially valuable asset at the deadline. A grinder guy with 40+ games of playoff experience

Thanks for that.

As we've discussed in the past, next year is about growing more with this team and seeing where we are when we have cap room to make a big splash. We need our wing upgrade desperately so let's see what MU can do with his magic.

It's comforting to know that he won't be trigger happy like BC and mortgage pieces of the future for short term gains. Or in BC's case no gains at all and setting us back years.

If we have another playoff appearance next year and make some noise, we should be in the running for a big FA the following off season.

I would like Jeff Green on this team if he wasn't making 10 mill. He'd fit in perfectly. Good 3rd scorer, great defender. He has inconsistency problems but with good players around him, you never know.

Celtics are looking to trade him to get him off the books. Hans + Salmons, #20 would get it done I think. He expires in 2016 I believe.

No way we are waiving hans.

I actually thought hans would have made a bit of a difference in the nets series if he actually got time. He was not utilized well at all by casey. Instead casey give min to chunky hayes.

But yeah we are not waiving him. IF we dont want to keep him or he doesnt want to come back because of casey, then trade him. He's a good asset

You say this but who is giving up an "asset" for Hansbrough? I don't see it unless the motive is to save money by waiving him. Again if our bigs break down like this

That's 14 players, the max is 15. Why would you carry a 4th PF when you need a 3rd string PG. You have till the 29th of June to waive him. If he isn't traded on draft night (or before) he's getting waived IMO.

TBH, it doesn't look like there are any big moves to be made this offseason (not counting re-signing Lowry).

I guess we could try to package Salmons/Hans in exchange for a large 2015 expiring that can actually play, but presumably guys like that would fetch a lot more than that.

Barring that, sign someone with the MLE if there's value there (again unlikely if history's any guide).

So to me it looks like we need to sit tight, waive Salmons/Hans and wait another year until Fields/Novak/Hayes expire. Wouldn't surprise me at all if we took a step back next year, which I'd actually prefer to a Colangelo-like short term splash. If Ross/JV/Demar continue to improve then we'll still be a playoff team.

VC isnt a big contract but he may prefer to stay in Dallas.Shawn Marion will be a FA if VC signs with Dallas and would cost the same as VC and plays SF/PF
