Wolstat: Raps Chased Rondo But Price Was Too High

Masai confirmed the interest in Rondo on radio last year.
http://www.torontosun.com/2014/12/18/ce ... -mavericksLast February, multiple sources told the Sun that the Raptors were aggressively chasing Rondo, but Boston’s asking price of Toronto’s first-round pick (which at the time looked like a lottery selection in one of the most heralded drafts in years) or another pick plus a young player like Terrence Ross or Jonas Valanciunas was deemed too steep. Toronto was considering moving Kyle Lowry to the Knicks and grabbing Rondo in a separate move, but luckily ended up retaining Lowry, who has since far surpassed Rondo as an all-around player.
This was the article from last season
http://www.torontosun.com/2014/02/17/ra ... ajon-rondoIt’s no secret Boston has dangled four-time all-star Rajon Rondo league-wide and while the asking price is steep, he has piqued the interest of Toronto’s front office, according to multiple sources. Toronto is eager to up its “star” quotient and is also enamoured with Rondo’s resume, particularly his four all-defensive team selections (two all-NBA first team). He has many backers in the organization.
Despite all that, Rondo would not come cheaply. Bull.com’s Sam Smith said the price is believed to be “two unprotected first rounders” while one source told the Sun the ask is a combination of at least one lottery pick and talented young player.
That’s where dealing Lowry would come in. Knicks owner James Dolan reportedly nixed a deal earlier in the season and Lowry responded by playing the best basketball of his career.
ESPN New York reported Monday that the Knicks have been reluctant to surrender either promising rookie Tim Hardaway Jr. or a future first-round pick. Either would be needed in a Toronto package for Rondo.

I remember most of us wanted Rondo over Lowry at the time. How times have changed in just a year.

As Raptor fans, you have to appreciate the Knicks. Taking Bargnani and refusing to give up assets for Lowry changed the course of this franchise. If they had acquired Lowry, we would've acquired Rondo, and who knows where we'd be.

Imagine this team with no Lowry, Jonas and Bruno, just with Rondo instead... Yuck.

As an Armchair GM for the past 15 years...... Id like to counter with Fields, Hayes, and a 2nd.

I don't think we "nearly acquired" Rondo if the price was too high. It means we talked to Ainge about it, and abandoned the idea.

Hindsight bias but.. If that's all they wanted from the Knicks then Dolan should've taken it... But ah wells.

Rondo doesn't really fit into our lineup. Lowry works much better because of his shooting, as he can shoot further out from the 3 point line. Having Jonas, Amir and DeRozan, we basically have limited 3 point shooting, and the reason we traded Gay and replace with sharp shooter in Ross explains a lot.
I think we are waiting for Jonas to stretch the floor, otherwise, our stagnate offense will be worsen with Fields at SF.

Lowry has all the intangibles Rondo has with a better offensive game.

Jonas can do that, but first he has to shoot. Just shoot. Please shoot. No pumpfake, no hesitation, just frikken' shoot!
Before JV came over, he used to take mid-range shots all the time. His FT percentage proves he still has a stroke. When he was drafted, he said he modeled his game after Bosh. So what the hell happened?

The real question is why the **** were we interested in Rondo in February last year when we were already in a playoff spot with Lowry. It still makes me wonder if the Casey-Lowry relationship isn't all that tight. Anyway, another dodged bullet, Masai. Leave contract year Marc Gasol alone, too, please.

James Dolan deserves almost as much credit as Massai

We agreed to a Lowry to the Knicks deal well before the playoffs, and apparently that's when we were looking to add him. The Knicks really bailed Masai out. Them going back on our deal was pretty much the difference between him looking like a fool and him having pretty much God status amongst Rap fans right now. While trading Rudy for depth worked out, losing both Rudy and Lowry while trading away young assets for Rondo really would have set us back.

Even he can shoot mid-range/baseline, it is not enough to space the floor, as the defender (shot blocker in particular) is still inside the paint.
