Raptors Ruined Valanciunas' Athleticism

Here is a mixtape of a quick-footed, high jumping, rookie JV. The Raptors trainers made him too bulky and there went his quickness and fluidity. The big question is whether a weight loss and some plyometrics would help to regain any of this athleticism?

You don't think its the excess drinking and driving, fatherhood at a young age that's causing his weight issues?

They made him bulk up the off season that he was the summer league MVP. That added muscle took away his athleticism big time:

He's not even remotely close to that size at this point of the season. Stop the excuses.

You're right. He's not.

However, in your opinion, he is noticeably slower than his rookie year, is he not?

He is way slower now and can't dunk like he used to during his rookie year.

Do you still think JV is better than Anthony Davis btw?

I know you think that.

I think it's also important to understand what the detractors think, where they think the problems lie. In order to move forward and fix the problems

Jonas was never going to get by solely on athleticism in the NBA. What he needs to do is develop some quick hitting scoop and flick shots around the rim to neutralize shot blocking, instead of trying to dunk everything.

Don't insult the word athleticism by putting it in the same sentence as JV

I was just thinking today about how Gortat is able to explode to the rim on a dump off, where JV is slow as molasses.

I don't think the athleticism is the biggest issue. I think Casey destroyed his confidence by benching him after every little mistake he made rather than letting him play through it. Val plays like he's been neutered.

the Raptors coaching asked him to bulk up like any young big man. Jonas turned up fat with zero conditioning. The guy is slow as a snail these days.

He has no one to blame but himself.

I agree with that, even when he was playing in Lithuania being quick, tall and being able to roll to the basket quickly were his strengths. I think Raptors staff were probably thinking of remaking him into a hard defensive/postup/rebounding big, something similar to big Al, but the truth is he is a completely opposite player..
