Amir is gone, who is going to roll in the pnr?

Post#1 » by hsb » Tue Aug 11, 2015 8:32 am

We focus so much on guarding the pick and roll. What about the Raptors?

Pick & Roll: Roll Man (pick and rolls, pick and pops and the screener slipping the pick)

The Raptors had the 4th lowest total and frequency for offensive roll man with 475 and 5.5% respectively. But as a team they had the second highest PPP and first EFG% in the league.

It becomes more clear when you look at offensive ball handlers, where the guards like to get theirs, even if it isn't as good efficiency wise: http://stats.nba.com/playtype/#!/ball-handler/?OD=offensive&dir=1&PT=player

Pick & Roll: Ball Handler

Why in the world are they not hitting the roller/pop more? Is there an easy explanation?

The scary part is, Amir took 167 possessions all by himself. That accounts for a pretty significant 35% of these plays. The only saving grace is there really isn't a poor roller on the team.

JJ, in particular, is a rolling juggernaut where he was basically unstoppable (although at a measly 23 attempts).

So what's going to happen now? Do the Raptors shoot for an all time low of connecting with the pop/roller?
"I definitely knew he traveled, but I didn't know they were going to call it. That was one of them situations in which a great player made a move...and they called the call. And I was like, 'Oh, man, there is a God.'

It also doesn't help that Bismack Biyombo's PPP in this play is 0.90, and Luis Scola's is 0.70.

People are going to say, the guards should hit the roll man better. Well that's like telling Rajon Rondo to shoot better. Hitting the roll man is a skill, arguably the toughest passing skill to learn, so it's going to be a lot harder to improve things than saying just do it.

Val should get more pnr, as will PP and hopefully JJ.

It will be interesting to see the effect of going from lou Will and GV to Cujo and Delon getting the backup pg mins. Hopefully, the ball gets to the roller more often this year. Pick and roll is a great play when the guards know how to use it.. One of Lowry's weaknesses imo

No one has to roll, just replace it with early clock chucking.

I really want to see what a lineup of Cojo, Tross, DMC, PatPat and JV can do - good defense, (hopefully) good ball movement, PnR threats, outside shooting and low post scoring.

JV but if his PnR usage is increased to take most of Amir's shots, I would expect some growing pains and 1 or 2 additional offensive fouls each game. And unfortunately our guards won't be happy to give up the rock if JV is awkward, even if he is productive overall.

Amir was really good though, wasn't he? I remember when he and JC hooked up on the PnR it was like a hot knife through butter.

Biyombo will roll into JV, knocking him out of the way, so he gets all the passes in the P'n'R.

When JV came into the league, he was advertised as a PnR big. This season should be his chance. With that said, we don't have many good (proven) pick and roll passers. Our guards prefer to keep the ball.

As an aside, I really do miss Jose's PnR game.

Other than the fact that they should play JJ more, they should run PnR with PP more. He was starting to hit that open midrange jumper.

The PnR would be great with JV if he had more confidence in taking the jumper. It would open up SO MUCH.

Also now...lol. Well, he's good not elite. I ball parked it, but he's top ten for centers in PPP.

It's actually the ball handlers that are way below average. DD and Vasquez in particular and that accounted for over 500 plays lol.

This might make even more sense now.

We didn't run pick and roll with Amir that much last season anyway.

Sure they did. Amir just didn't finish that many.

A guard creating his own shot using a high ball screen is still a P&R or P&P.
