[OT] Interesting analysis on Andrew Wiggins

Post#1 » by nitrous » Sat Jul 29, 2017 3:24 pm

I know many here are very fond of Andrew Wiggins to the point that they would rather have Wiggins than Demar even if they were paid the same. While many here believe Demar is undeserving of a max contract (even though given the new TV deal he is far from a max deal), Andrew Wiggins will be seeking a max new tv deal contract.

Full analysis found here: https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/6q8vro/andrew_wiggins_is_statistically_the_worst_21_year/

Some highlights:
Andrew Wiggins is, statistically, the worst 21 year old player to average at least 20 PPG
Wiggins ranks last among these players in VORP, and is the only player in the negatives.

Wiggins has the lowest combined total of APG and RPG, even lower than Rudy Gay.

Wiggins is tied for the third-lowest combined total of SPG and BPG. He's ahead of Blake Griffin and Derrick Rose, but is in a three-way tie with Jabari Parker and Stephon Marbury.

Wiggins ranks last in PER.

Wiggins ranks last in DRTG (Rick Barry and Spencer Haywood's stat were unavailable).

Wiggins ranks 27th out of 32 in TRB%, and last among non-PGs (Rick Barry's stat was unavailable).

Wiggins ranks 28th out of 33 in AST%.

Wiggins ranks 29th out of 33 in WS, in his third season he's ahead of Rookie Iverson, Rookie Webber, Jabari Parker, and Spencer Haywood.

Wiggins ranks 32nd out of 33 in WS%, only above Rookie Iverson.

Wiggins ranks 30th out of 31 in both OBPM and DBPM (Rick Barry and Spencer Haywood's stat were unavailable).

Yup he's Rudy Gay 2.0

Severely over-hyped by us because he's Canadian.

It probably also has to do with Wiggins being 5.5 years younger than DeRozan.

You change the criteria to 22 year olds with more than 16ppg, and DeMar ranks 4th worst of all time in a less exclusive group of 136 players.

This doesn't even bring up the stat where players shoot a higher % when he's guarding them than they do on wide-open shots.

I don't understand how people could even doubt Wiggins. The kid is a freak.

this whole wiggins extension situation seems very similar to DD's extension several years back.

People werent really sure what DD will become but he eventually turned out okay. Obviously the money is different but in terms of cap%, similar situation.

He's super young but he's an absolute mess defensively. The DD comparisons aren't all that far off, but he's at least on a team where he's slotted in as the 3rd banana which is perfect given his skillset.

LEAST DEFENSIVE PLAYER
Andrew Wiggins, Minnesota Timberwolves
Thanks to a draft-day trade, Tom Thibodeau is reunited with defensive stopper Jimmy Butler, and not a moment too soon. Butler will be joining forces with the single most catastrophic defender in the league: Andrew Wiggins.

Using the NBA’s player-tracking data to look at shots defended and how those shots turned out,1 we can see who’s making a positive impact, who’s making a negative impact, and who’s making the most impact.

Sure. But will he ever be great?

Not unless he fixes his defense.

He's only 22 guys need to chill... Wait till he's like 26 then judge. Not many people in the entire league can EVER do this... The guy has an Olympic work ethic and will get better just give him time.

I said the same thing about Demar and people laughed at me, he turned out pretty good when tons of people thought he would never even make one allstar game. Please those same people just shut your face about Wiggins because Demar proved to everyone on these forums you guys don't know **** about basketball.

WORK ETHIC > ALL

There are not many 6 8' 22 year olds putting up 23ppg who have freakish athletic ability like Wiggins.. Sky is the limit for this rookie of the year it's all about how hard he is willing to work and I believe he will work his ass off. Please don't judge a 22 year the guy is no where near his prime yet. Also please remember at the same age Wiggins was miles ahead of Demars 16ppg and 26% 3p %... Demar didn't get up to 23ppg till he was 24. Ironically Demar is hitting his prime at 27 exactly like I predicted. Don't believe me? search my posts..

Wiggins is a fraud but Powell/Siakam/Delon/Poeltl are legit.
