OT: SLAM interview w Patrick Patterson

Post#1 » by Sherlock » Sun Jul 30, 2017 1:26 am

Offseason so figured this was worth posting given lack of other news. Couple of Raptors relevant snippets...

http://www.slamonline.com/nba/patrick-patterson-interview/#Joqkcsq7Xcrb0os4.97

SLAM: What are you going to miss most about Toronto?

Patrick Patterson: What I’m going to miss most is the fans and the relationships that I’ve made with friends. The fans make that city, they make the experience there in Toronto worthwhile. From packing in the arena to staying outside in the freezing cold in the rain at Jurassic Park…A lot of people sleep on the city of Toronto. I did when I first moved out there. I’m thinking, It’s cold, it’s a foreign country, it’s this, it’s that, it’s nothing but hockey. But you spend some time out there, you realize it’s not bad. It’s a phenomenal place.

He spent part of the summer interning with a movie studio.

SLAM: What was your internship with Open Road Films like?

PP: I followed around the marketing and advertising team, followed the acquisitions and distributions teams, had lunch with VPs and CEOs, and just had conversations about what they do. I had the opportunity to create a trailer for an upcoming movie and also sit in on a bunch of weekly meetings—every aspect of the business side.

It was eye-opening, because I really had no idea what goes into it, how much hard work it is. The first time they showed me a trailer, it was a rough draft clip. I had no idea, and they’re like, ‘What do you think of this?’ and I’m like, Man, that’s great. It looks good, it’s ready to go out. And he goes, ‘Man, this is just the rough draft.’

It was weird. I’ve never had a 9-to-5 before. I’ve never sat down in a cubicle before, let alone for nine hours—more on some days. But overall it was a great experience, and I’m very grateful that they allowed me to do that with them.

When was Star Wars released? Who were we playing?

SLAM: Has there been a time recently when you really wanted to see a movie on opening night, but the NBA schedule wouldn’t allow it?

PP: Star Wars: The Force Awakens! I had my costume all set up. Of course, everyone is going to this movie theater dressed up in their Star Wars costumes, all the characters that have ever been made. I got my tickets ahead of schedule, without even looking at when we were playing, and then next thing I know, I look at the schedule and we’re playing out of the country, so I was quite upset.

What do you know, selling seats does matter to players. I wonder if one day a player will sign because they want to play in front of a full crowd every night.

I always thought Patterson's love for movies was an exaggeration here like Ross and XBox, but it looks like he's serious about it. Even though Los Angeles is the home of movies, thanks to digital filming other cities are quickly turning into movie epicenters, particularly Atlanta, New Orleans, Vancouver, and...Toronto. Would be nice that later on in his life he'll look to investing in studios in Toronto, there's a ton of untapped potential there.

Fixed :)

Most of the NBA players do not mind the city of Toronto, its the cold and taxes that gets them. Even though the Taxes are not as bad as they are made out to be.

What I found interesting is the amount of time he's committed to it.

He's spending 8 hours/day 5 days/week working for a studio. Most other NBAers are either training with specialist coaches or playing in various pick up leagues or both.

Different strokes for different folks I guess, but I believe that if PPat had spent more time in the gym in his off time putting up shots and could up his percentages a couple of points, he'd have earned himself a significantly larger payday this offseason.

He is already thinking about life in his later 30's post basketball. I do not think for a moment going to OKC was a basketball decision but rather when he knew Ibaka was the new long ball shooting power forward his role would be Casey cookie cutter. Even if he took his usual 5 or 6 mil he knows going to a team with Westbrook and George and bruiser Adams it probably will up his value. Truth is Raps walked from him for cap space. So much for bird rights.

Our cold is always highlighted compared to, say, Chicago.

Miami Heat who we beat 108-94. Patterson scored a whopping 2 points on 1-3 shooting(0 for 2 from 3) in 23:54 . He did have 8 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal. A typical Patterson night I suppose.
also lol scola scored 20.

He dumped amber rose because she accidentally tripped on the router while he was playing 2k and he got disconnected. Ross is a straight savage with his xbox.

Patterson would be a much better player if he had the love towards basketball like he does with movies.

"Significantly larger?" If Pat could just be the two-way player he's supposed to be, and has the talent and smarts to be, this contract could have funded his own movie in a couple of years.

It's frustrating to us as fans, but some guys just aren't cut out to putting the time in. I was excited when we picked up Julian Wright, but he's another smart guy who had too many outside interests. Sure, like Pat, he could play defence, But being able to shoot consistently takes a massive time commitment that Juju wasn't willing to make.

Seriously man I get so cheesed when my girl walks in front of the TV when I'm playing Street Fighter V online.

To me Patterson comes off as a guy thats playing basketball for the paycheck and nothing more. Some people would work extra hard in a contract year to get a bigger contract but patterson comes off as the type of guy thats happy with a couple mill as long as he doesn't have to put in any extra work. Dude rather spend his time watching movies, going to the clubs or some kind of film festival. He's just looking to make enough money that will allow him to support this lifestyle. Did anybody think james johnson would get a bigger pay day than patrick patterson before last season started ? Patterson comes off as the kind of guy that would sign a contract to play in the Euro league just to explore a certain city in Europe.

And to me that's perfectly fine. Obviously you hope for more from a player on your team but as a regular person that's completely reasonable and quite relatable

In addition to being upset he didn't get to see Star Wars opening night, Patterson also became enraged when the team bus didn't stop for ice cream on the way to the airport that night.

Watching movies and going to the club = not working hard?

Why is it one or the other?
