Years Played: 2009-present
Career Per-Game Stats: 19.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.0 steals, 0.3 blocks
Career Advanced Metrics: 17.3 PER, 53.3 TS%, 0.105 WS/48, minus-414.5 TPA
Career Accolades: Three-time All-Star, All-NBA
That's not a typo.
DeMar DeRozan really has a negative TPA score in his career, thanks in large part to his consistently woeful play on the preventing end. In his defense, that's at least trending in a positive direction, as he's now posted plus scores in three of his last four seasons: 40.4 in 2013-14, 81.4 in 2015-16 and 46.5 in 2016-17.
But still, the fact he's earning All-Star berths—and even an All-NBA nod this past go-round—is utterly ridiculous.
DeRozan is a good secondary or tertiary player. He can put up points in bunches and score against even the tightest defensive coverage because his strength allows him to fight through contact when he shoots from his favored mid-range zones. But his points often fall into the LaMarcus Aldridge category: fairly empty, thanks to the inability to connect from downtown and tally a high number of points per possession.
During the 2016-17 campaign, 55 qualified players produced at least 15 points per game. Among that group, DeRozan's points per field-goal attempt ranked 31st—a bad finish for a one-way player who takes plenty of shots during his average appearance.
And it gets worse, because his commandeering style of play takes his teammates out of the half-court action. He can become so intent on finding a mid-range look that he dribbles down the shot clock and forces the Toronto Raptors into running nothing more than an ill-advised isolation attempt.
This is just another part of the reason Toronto has been worse with him on the floor for each of the last five seasons. In fact, 2016-17 was the first time since 2013-14 that the Raptors even scored more points per 100 possessions when he played, and it wasn't enough of a margin to offset the defensive drop.
DeRozan is a valuable player. He deserves to earn fringe All-Star love.
He should not, however, be the leader of a team. Nor should he be earning much All-NBA consideration, even at the league's weakest position.

Well, just reinforces that this is Lowry's team, and DeMar is the secondary player as the article says he is, it is why we are successful now and not before when we were using DeMar as the first option. I have a love hate for DeMar, he can clearly score, he loves the City and has a drive to become the best Raptor, but a lot of his success comes from Lowry and the rest of the team, not the other way around.

Re: Bleacher Report on DeMar: "the fact he's earning All-Star berths...is utterly ridiculous"
So why is he a member of team USA ? Team USA coaches are clueless to right ? Why is he being picked by different coaches for the allstar game ? Coaches around the league are clueless to right ? Dude was top 5 in scoring for a good part of the season. What some of you don't realize is the bleacher Report is written by fans. They hire fans to write for their site so anybody with any kind of ill feeling towards a player can write their OPINIONS!!!! I guess a bleacher writer sitting in his moms basement is more qualified than the coaches around the league, or team USA coaches right ? You know the people that actually know the game and been around different players their whole career playing and coaching. Yea I'll go with the geek writing from his moms 2 bedroom apartment. The bleacher is one site I never visit because they're always on some anti Canada BS.

He did put up 27.1ppg/5.2rpg/4.4apg on 56.5TS% when Lowry was out for 21 games, so there's that.

If I took bleacher report seriously EVER I might be like wtf, but thankfully I don't, they've just cemented the fact that they're a Raptor/Canada hating POS blog.

idgaf what advanced stats they come up with to show that Debo sucks, he's still the best raptor of all time and teams would love to have him regardless of his shortcomings.
So middle finger to bleacher report. I wouldn't mind keeping Demar for the rest of his career tbh

they also posted some jays hate BS. I Remember seeing a tweet from them where they posted about things the US took from Canada. They tweeted it around the time the rumours came out about masai possible going to the knicks. I stopped checking out their blogs when they actually called us the toronto drake's and they had a full blog on how the truth punked canada.zippy wrote:If I took bleacher report seriously EVER I might be like wtf, but thankfully I don't, they've just cemented the fact that they're a Raptor/Canada hating POS blog.

See sig. And the fact that we had the best record in the East after the ASB, without Lowry (Bucks were second).

I don't understand the hate.
Have they seen Paul George's offensive stats? Talk about a volume chucker who creates for his teammates LESS than DD does which is the central point of their argument.

I hear he is practicing his 3pt shot and defense this year tho!

Paul George has a 28.9 USAGE% with a 16.1 AST% -- for a raw 3.4 apg per 36
Demar has a 34.3 USAGE with a 20.6 AST% -- for a raw 4.0 apg per 36
I'm pretty sure the uptick in usage specifically helps Demar in getting higher assist numbers, and even then he isn't that much better, if not comparable or worse... Demar wins in OWS for the season but loses in OBPM
PG shoots a better precentage than Demar on less shots from 2pt range, and the only reason his overal FG% is 0.6% less than Demar is because he shoots 4+ more 3pointers a game than Demar...
Unless you are valuing 3 free throws per game as your saving grace .... just no.

Wow...just Wow. Theres a difference between a statistical leader, and an actual leader on the team. DD is a leader on and off the court representing the Raptors. The 3 point shot is not the make or break component of the NBA, though it is critical, you have specialists whose only job is to do that. This is just filler news, make raptors fans upset.

Re: Bleacher Report on DeMar: "the fact he's earning All-Star berths...is utterly ridiculous"
I don't disagree with the article as a whole. Aldridge, Arenas, Ewing, Wilkens, Maravich, Rondo and Demar are all overhyped.
Aldridge is a lesser version of Bosh.
Arenas had a few good years and that's it.
Ewing benefited from playing in NYC.
Wilkens dunks overshadowed his shortcomings.
The Demar love probably comes from the fact that Americans only see his highlights and not his actual games.
Rondo is still feasting off the Boston Big 3 recognition.
Maravich gets love due to his play-style but, he had huge shortcomings - very similar to the love that Jason Williams gets.
I'm not sure why they put Ellis on the list.
