Too bad the Raptors can't trade Lowry until December. I know the Cavs want young pieces to build after Lebron leaves but Lowry would have been tempting. He gives them the best chance at winning while just replacing Irving on the roster.

Lowry + 1st rounder

For

Irving + bad contract

No?

And plus, there is an entire corporate side to everything that isn't publicized.

This. Masai is responsible for the overall health and growth of the basketball organization. People actually think the cheapos at Bell/Rogers would pay Masai millions in salary if all he's doing is taking care of basketball in Africa? That's absurd.

Masai is head of the Raptors basketball team only, as Shanahan for the Leafs and Manning for TFC. The "corporate side" of things are headed by other Executives on the MLSE org chart. For example, Pistore for ticket sales, Hosford for marketing, Divine for Finance, Eaves for corporate operations, etc. Masai has is accountable for all things basketball (e.g., the team & coaches) only. As for salary, he's paid millions because that's the market rate for basketball Executives.

You don't think Pistore/Divine/Eaves/Hosford have regular meetings with Shannie/Masai/Manning? The GM is the highest position that's STRICTLY basketball (or hockey, soccer). Masai helps MLSE execs make decisions by giving his thoughts from the perspective of a basketball organization. The MLSE execs don't HAVE TO know that much about each specific sport, although I'm sure it helps. Basically, execs probably go to Masai and says something like "Hey Masai, if we do X, how do you think that would affect the Raptors organization specifically?"
