He broke up with his girl, and I think someone mentioned someone close to him had passed away recently.

If he's tweeting about it it could be pretty serious. He's always someone that's kept his life as private as possible.

Has a lot of family stuff going on right now I wouldn't be surprised at all. Hell even those who seem to have it all together may very well be dealing with depression.

Both parents health is deteriorating, Wifey and him are separated, another friend of his got killed. It's been a rough few months for Demar.

I wasn't sure if he was just randomly quoting the Kevin Gates song, or he picked that line for a reason.

No, it's not clear. There's a major difference between being sad, grief, and clinical depression. "Depressed" gets thrown around too freely these days. If he is actually clinically depressed, I hope he seeks the help he needs.

That is because it is a word like cancer. It describes many variants. There are many different types of depression. Depression following grief or part of grieving can be as bad as other forms but is likely short lived. We just do not have the names to go with the different afflictions.

Damn it sounds like he's had a it rough recently - could explain his recent dip in form. Hope he can pull through, not just for his game, but for his own well being. I've been through depression and it's an awful thing to have.

Hope he gets better. That helps to explain why he has not been at his best for the last couple weeks. That's a lot to deal with.

Depression following grief is depression. If grief persists for longer than 6 months, and is accompanied by signs of depression, it is depression. The DSM-5 has clear guidelines for diagnosing it. He could be grieving, he could be depressed, he could be just sad or deflated.

The only reason I'm being a stickler about this is because I have adolescents come in several times a week and their parents say that they told them they are depressed. Then we do a depression screen and there isn't one sign of depression. Of course, it's better to be safe than sorry. I think we should just choose our words more carefully.

But again, if he is depressed, I hope he seeks the help he needs.

It's when you return home for more than just a day that reality really sets in. Both parents in poor health, someone close to him having passed away...it is a lot to process. I feel bad for him. It's one thing for his mom to be managing a pretty serious chronic illness but for his dad to be doing much worse with kidney disease. I don't know how many of us have had to deal with not just one chronically/termially ill parent but to have 2 of them at the same time?

I hope he can at least find basketball a good escape from it all when he gets back to Toronto after his break...even if it is just a temporary escape.

Pretty sure he’s quoting Kevin Gates lyrics.

https://g.co/kgs/nVrkNX

Kevin Gates is one of his favorites and is on a playlist he shared.
http://thelab.bleacherreport.com/demar-derozan-music-soundtrack/

Derozan on Kevin Gates:

“In the beginning of the song, he says it's a grind," DeRozan says of the refrain from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, rapper Kevin Gates. "It's a hustle. It's persistence. That's what it always was for me, was the grind, the hustle, the persistence of putting that into my craft. It was something I always wish I had. He raps about what he wish he had, and it was all about staying on track of what you believe in. That's hustling and that's grinding and that's putting in the work every single day."

He’s also randomly quoted Kevin Gates before on Twitter:

Based on all of this I think this thread is a reach.

Helix, why is he quoting that specific line? Because it's so dope and original and relevant to anything else at all?

Nah man, It's no reach at all to think someone in pretty extremely trying personal circumstances quoting song lines about depression is struggling some.

Same reason he quoted the other song lines I shared above as tweets from Kevin Gates. He likes the songs and is sharing what he’s listening to.
