Leafs fans talking about bball, pretending like they know everything is most annoying thing of life.

"Pascal Siakam should drive to the net more, why the raptors so stupid?" - An actual leafs fan said this to me earlier in the year

It's crazy. I remember in like December we beat the Bruins back to back without Matthews, and then they just blew up. The Leafs never really seemed sharp enough to make a deep run this year, but there's no talent-based reason why the Bruins should be better. Even for most of last night the Leafs dominated. They just can't seem to get leads and have no ability to come back.

good thing the Leafs got the better player.

He's better than the leading scorer on the team with the second best record in the league? He's better than the guy with the 3rd most goals by a teenager in NHL history? He's better than the guy who just set the record for most consecutive games with a point by a teenager? He's better than the guy who just scored at the second highest goal per hour pace of the last decade? Wow he must be exceptional then.

Come on, man. At absolute best, maybe 2 teams would take Laine over Matthews. Matthews is a center, which is the more valuable position and he produces at a higher rate too. Matthews has 2 fewer points despite playing 11 fewer games than Laine. He's way better at 5v5 and generates way more high danger chances.

And Laine is the 3rd best forward on his team, behind Wheeler and Scheifele. Come on now.

Matthews would be the 4th best forward on the Jets. That's why they have the second best record in the league in spite of a nightmare division and schedule.

Generating chances is one thing. Laine actually converts on them at a historic rate. His goals produced is around double his expected goals. It's virtually unheard of in the modern game.

As for durability; availability is pretty important. Laine had a brutal concussion last year and I was actually worried he was going to have durability issues; but the kid came back a beast this year. He's 6'5", and probably around 225 at this point. Paul Maurice is consistently giving him praise for how awesome he is defensively. How many guys that size could get 2nd place in the fastest skater contest? He's simply a freak of nature.

But he's a Rockets fan so I'll dock him a few points.

No way is Laine better than Matthews. Is Laine a great players? Yes. The Laffs are just playing out part two of the great meltdown against Rask, Bergeron and Kreji when they had Phil and Phaneuf. Jim Hughson is still there to stick it to Leaf fans all the more. Laffs learning curve is ahead of schedule so this "setback" is really par for the course. Actually it is bogey golf.

Matthews a ppg+, defensively responsible center would be the 4th best forward on the Jets?

And yes "generating chances is one thing," but Matthews also has produces at a higher rate than Laine, so I don't know where you're trying to go with that.

And team record is now being attributed to individual players? So, when Laine's Jets missed the playoffs last year, while the Leafs got in, did that mean anything too? Is Laine worse than a bunch of Nashville players because the Preds were the best regular season team?

Well yeah... I mean Wheeler, Schiefele and Laine are all better than him.

I'm not sure what you're talking about at the end of your post. That went way of the rails. Let's respectfully agree to disagree. I'll bookmark this so we can continue this conversation next year. :D Cheers! Go Raps!

Win or lose, I'd rather have Matthews over Laine any day. Franchise centre who excels on d and in 5v5 play is much more valuable than a sniping winger imo.

Losing Kadri for these three games really hurt us bad. Marner and Kadri had it going for months and were such a dangerous line on both ends.

Winnipeg is going to win a Stanley Cup before Toronto. Just pathetic. It didn't take long for our young guys to adopt the loser mentality of past Leafs teams. As an act of mercy, the NHL should just contract the Leafs.

Return to Toronto Raptors
