Defense exposed?

Post#1 » by Dr Positivity » Sat Apr 21, 2018 2:40 am

While they can overcome one game game, they had this coming as the defense was poor all series and inconsistent at the end of the season. There hasn't been many stretches where they can just shut down Washington for minutes at a time other than to close out games. This isn't the Cavs where LBJ and Love/Frye frontcourt was just unstoppable. Washington should be stoppable. They aren't that deep or well coached.

Much has been made of the dramatic change on offense but there is usually a cost. The previous teams were ugly on offense but they also had the identity to win meat grinder games and made the ECF averaging like 93ppg which seems far away from the current team. Being able to put the hard hat on was essential to getting home court saving road wins against Indy, Miami and Milwaukee. It is easier to have energy for defense and rebounding when on offense all you're doing is watching Derozan and Lowry pound the rock. So far this team has made scoring look pretty but have not been able to play that style of game to win ugly.

It's been exposed since after the rockets game march 9th. We had 24th defense since than. People thought we had on switch with defense playoffs but not really

John Wall shot poorly around the basket through 2 games, but in this one it was like they wanted to take his drive away completely and give him open midrange jumpers. That didn't work, since he was in a rhythm making them. Just let him dribble their offense to a halt, take tough driving shots vs our bigs and for god's sakes stay home on weakside shooters. They had kickouts to Scott and Lawson to end the half where JV and DeRozan drifted into no-man's land for no reason.

Had good defensive sequences to start the game and a bit in the 2nd quarter when the bench got more comfortable - Wright stopped Satoransky in transition then Siakam totally stood up Lawson on a drive. Then after the 3rd q skirmish Ibaka lost his cool, Wizards were amped up and the refs called absolutely everything to "take control" of the game, including 2 straight ticky tac ones on Wright. Then it was a parade to the FT line for them.

Raptors definitely have some holes in their defense but they can play way better

Last year out weakest defensive position was C and this year our weakest defensive position is still center. We' re asking some pretty mediocre defensive players to make up for some obvious shortcomings.

Well, don't we have a defensive-minded head coach tho?

Our GM was unable to move JV to upgrade with a better defensive C for less money. The coach is stuck playing a guy he's never really valued as a defensive player. There's a reason why Utah and Philadelphia are considered great defensive teams, and its not because their centers can score 12ppg.

We're also missing FVV who's a major spark-plug, he's our best bench player/sixth man by far..

Yes the defense is an issue, but that doesn't change the fact that these games could look dramatically different if he was healthy. Our second unit looks awful without him at times, especially if Delon is struggling. We had a lead in that 1Q until they came in and we were having problems putting together plays, we were using Miles and DeRozan to bring up the ball.

 Sure sure. Not like the stats for washington are the same for all three games...

Turnovers. Turnovers is all that's giving Washington a chance. We were a low turnover team, and we better get back to it.

OK I missed the game but JV had an +/- of 0 in 23 minutes. We also had the 5th best defense in the league in the RS.

18 Turnovers
20 assists

Wizards read our passes on offence - leading to run outs and fast break points.

Clean up the offense - pass confidently.

Let Wall shoot to his heart's content. Don't give passes.

Lastly, refs had a soft whistle on the Raptors. Wizards definitely were more physical and Raptors have to match.
Pretty neat and on the fridge for the real fans:
