12 hours later: What are your thoughts on this deal?

Not going to lie, at first I was ecstatic that we acquired Kawhi Leonard, but as the day went by and the reality of DeRozan no longer being a Raptor really bums me out as a fan. Yes it’s for the better, but if you can void this deal, would you do it?

Ujiri: Hey...We're gonna get it. I don't know when it'll be, but we're gonna get it. Just like I said we'll get the first one and I said I didn't know when we'd get it...But we will. Guarantee you we will.

Honestly I would have had a prove it attitude all season expecting to be disappointed even if the Raptors won 68 games... now I expect them to win 65+ and stroll into the finals and at least a somewhat competitive series with the Warriors. A finals win with Demar would have been amazing, but extremely unlikely. The win now is less as sweet, but far more likely. Also beating the Warriors when no one thought it was possible would still be incredible.

Same as it was to begin with; it's amazing that we got Kawhi & DG for what we did.

...and I'd have you banned before I void this awesome deal.

Happier than I was this morning.

Now that I know Kawhi is going to be at the team USA practice next week and he has has had a positive conversation with Ujiri. I wasn't sure about his health.

Still think it was a bad idea in principle because I don't think he'll re-sign even if we make finals, but the actual trade was great. Masai did a great job with the price. Hell he even got the Spurs to give us 5M toward the tax bill.

We traded a fringe starter for the second best player in the league.

Love it.

read a few posts; listened to the bill simmons and zach lowe 'emergency' podcasts; and the conclusion is that it is a worthwhile risk as long as he's healthy. We have an uphill battle with a rookie coach but i'm hoping masai steady and firm hand will carry this team, because, with this move, this is now HIS team.

Sucks to lose DD however we all wanted MU to be bold and make a move. Really happy to see this.

I fully realize how hypocritial the media / players are. They criticize the Raptors FO for not being loyal but the media talks about how Bosh, Carter and McGrady left the Raptors (although all 3 were willing to come back or regret leaving). So wouldn't the lack of loyalty by past players impact current management? Players not loyal ok. FO not loyal not ok.

Lou Williams talks about not being loyal but he signed with the Clippers who did Blake Griffin incredibly dirty.
Carroll threw shade at DD and Lowry for not passing the ball but you love him now to give him a statue?
Ross should be quiet, he barely plays.
Kanter plays for the Knicks.

Losing DD still hurts but one thing I remember well now - Masai isn't stupid. He's also close with SA so they can help each other out. He has a plan if he shows up and one if he doesn't. One if things are bad and one if they're great. One for Lowry if he is down and one if he wants out. At the end of the day he wants to give us the best chance to win and that can't be forgotten.

SA is also savage. Pops got rid of Hill, who he loved, for Kawhi. They didn't keep Parker. Didn't keep K. Anderson. As a loyal FO we were not competing with savages like Ainge, Buford, Morey, etc. We need to take advantage of situations to win and I don't like the trade but 12 hours later I embrace it a push to get by our limitations.
2025 is going to be a hell of year - have fun with it.

Some similarities with first time coaching hires Nick Nurse and David Blatt, whose teams both immediately acquired superstar players right afterward. Lets hope Nurse does a little better than Blatt. He's following Pop which is pretty tough regardless of how bad it got with Kawhi.
