Regardless if he leaves or not buying property is usually a good move and it's an asset to hold onto and I doubt prices are going to drop much here in the future unless the economy crashes badly or something like that.

Smart by him even if he leaves this off-season. He can probably re-sell it for even more in a year, or if he stays he still owns a house and won't have to worry about getting one next off-season or renting.

Also is the house large and in family friendly neighbourhood close to schools and amenities? Or is it just a low maintenance property close to the arena and practice facility he will use as essentially an AirBNB till he leaves? We need to analyze this further.

If it’s a detach or condo I wouldn’t read much into that. Detach is a better investment to flip 8 months from now, doesn’t mean he’s putting down roots.
