People remember we didn't have his bird rights? Unless he wanted to play for like the MLE (and I can't even remember if we had it that year) he was automatically gone.

It was well known that he was gone, even if we did have Bird Rights. He played himself into a huge pay raise and there was no way we could justify paying him big dollars to play off the bench. I'm not sure many expected he'd get paid as handsomely as he did, but the contract we signed him for was a "show me" deal and he definitely warranted more dollars.

Sure, but I'm saying it was actually impossible to sign him for more than chump change. It's one thing for us to decline an overpay - then it's at least notionally a choice by the FO. But with Biz we just couldn't do anything.

Jesus some of you guys are beyond ridiculous.
He is having most impactful year of his career looking into advanced stats, box stats are very very good considering his minutes.
If he struggles in one matchup, he destroys other gettint 20/12 in 20 minutes and such. Stop spewing this bs. At least try to stay objective.

Most impactful? I'm looking at his games vs playoff level teams and it sure doesn't seem that way.

He needs to take 1 step further up on PnR coverage. Dude stays 3 feet in front of the ball handler and the roll man isn't even moving yet. Guys just use that space for floaters or pull-ups. Its why Washington looks great against us. Even if they try to drive we can have help and he's still long enough to make it a hard layup instead of an uncontested shot from midrange

I agree, but part of the problem is that when JV does come out and contest close, (other than exposing himself to getting blown by by quick guards for layups) his man ends up getting great rebounding position because the other players don't rotate to his man and box out and we get killed on 2nd chance points. Because of this, and because JV is our best rebounder, JV only protects the painted area and the defense is conceding the foul line shot/floater as it tends to be a lower percentage shot and because JV doesn't come out far (or drops back well into the paint) it keeps the ballhandler from blowing by him and JV is in good position for the rebound.

I also think Nurse is protecting him from those ticky tack fouls that refs EASILY call on him when he shows hard on PnR's, which essentially takes out our best rebounder.

Either JV contests foul line jumpers closer and other players rotate better on his man (but this opens up opportunities for open 3 pointers - most defenses are trying to deny as a main objective), or live with the low percentage 2 pointer.

He doesn't need to contest the midrange J, just encourage the drive and keep his arms stretched so he can turn and make the layup hard. He literally stands 5 feet away from the pnr ball handler and lets him take a wide open floater or midrange from the FT line all game long. Every capable guard can make a floater that uncontested at over 50% and that type of thing keeps people in the game.

I'm just imagining him playing vs the Celtics and Kyrie just taking open floaters and midrange shots all game off PnR because Val is standing under the rim with his hands up

It's hard to see what you get from JV that you can't get from Monroe. Monroe's been 13.6p/8.5r/2.2a/1.1s/0.6b/1.9t over 28.5mpg in his career. His defense isn't good, but neither is JVs, who has averages of 11.7p/8.5r/0.8a/0.4s/1.0b/1.5t in 25.2 mpg. Pretty similar, trading steals for blocks but getting more points and assists from Monroe. Jonas is more efficient though, but not by a ton.

If they could move JV for a Poeltl-type they could easily shift Monroe into JVs role without much dropoff, and have an atheltic switching C for those matchups to help spell Ibaka.

I've never read something more wrong in my life. There is more to the NBA than just the raw stats.

I wouldn't mind JV if he was making 5mil/year and only used against other stiffs. If I was nurse I wouldn't even play him most games and go small with scal at the 5 when ibaka is resting. JV just takes the energy out of the team with his dumb plays and soft post ups. He literally has zero post moves, imagine if we had 16 biyambo as ibakas backup.
