Can someone explain why Green took less money?

As for GSW, I can't see them winning another title unless they can somehow get a significant haul for Russell and/or find some gems through the draft and free agency. They are significantly weaker now. There was less competition in the NBA when they won their first title and they had a deep roster. Then they added KD.

Now they have the same core as 2015 but no depth (eg Iggy and Livingston were huge for them). Russell is no where near as good as KD and doesn't fit as well in their lineup. They also now have to deal with a much tougher conference in which any team could beat them in the playoffs. The dynasty is dead IMO and they may need to trade their core guys after a couple of years since there is no point in paying that much in luxury tax if you aren't competing for titles.

part of me wonders if he looked at the career of someone like Ron Artest and realized that he should stay where he fits perfectly.
Green's the kind of player that you theoretically want to add to most teams but i wouldn't be surprised if it ended up not working out. similar to what me might see with the Clippers this year.

In the day and age of salary caps, is Dray worth $25 mil/year?

This is a great deal for the Warriors. I would easily take his contract over Wiggins, Harris, and maybe even Middleton for what they got.......

Agreed. Other players make alot more than Draymond but id rather have him then most others' Contracts.

Id look at Russell for a future acquisition. I still don't believe GS wants him for longterm for the amount of tax they'll need to pay. They sign and traded for him to reduce the sting and make sure the Lakers didn't get him.

Russel is something they took because why not. He's got no future on that team besides insurance for Klay if he's done as a result of the injury, unless he actually breaks out as a shooter instead of being just DD.

Because it is an extension. So for the first year salary it can only be 20 percent higher than his current salary of 18 million.
If he waited till FA he could've gotten a true max.

NBA rules are weird.

Pretty much where his value is.

The risk of waiting is too high in my opinion...he made a smart move.

If Warriors struggle until Klay comes back and Green's 3 point shooting is bad his value will go down, especially at the age of 30.

He's not an all-star on any other team...he's a borderline all-star at best.

Because he's not KD or Thompson. One major injury and he may be out the league. Better secure that money.

Less competition?

The West was stacked in 2015 and 2016.

You had the Westbrook-Durant Thunder, the Paul-Griffin-Jordan Clippers, the Randolph-Gasol-Conley-Allen Grizzlies, the Kawhi-Duncan-Parker-Ginobili Spurs, the Harden-Howard Rockets, the Lillard-Aldridge Blazers etc.

Those were all 50+ win teams that were pretty damn good.

You forget that the Warriors were historically great...winning 67 games in 2015 and a record 73 games in 2016. This wasn't some team that took advantage of a weak Western Conference.

Wow, that's an amazing deal for GSW. He must have really wanted to stay.

He's not messing with a good thing. He's got a DPOY and 3 titles, and if he sticks it out with Curry and Klay has a path to the HOF. He's clearly gunning for legacy.

I'd love to Siakam on this type of deal.

Draymond is too smart and too good of a player for that. He'll be effective into his mid 30s if he stays in shape. The reason he took less money is because he fits perfectly next to Klay and Steph and he knows it. He 100% could get the max in free agency. Miami would probably give it to him. Charlotte and/or Knicks definitely would. This was about keeping the gang together and trying to do something special. Warriors were never going to pay him max because they just maxed Klay and Steph is already on supermax. I suspect that if he didn't take this deal they would have traded him.
