Kerr was probably 1 vote. Bud, Brett Brown or Pop for the second vote?

Oh it’s the GMs that vote and not the coaches. Who knows. I’d think Jeff Weltman (or his GM is John Hamon) likely voted for Nurse and other Raps.

If you go back to the 2018-19 survey, the GM picks Golden State or Houston to win the title over Boston.

Probably this

or they just don't care enough to really put any thought into it

A lot of GMs are clowns. Most NBA front offices are run like old boys clubs, not meritocracies.

It's quite impressive considering the experience those other guys had. Clifford and Brown were both in their 6th year as head coaches and Kerr was in his 5th.

In the playoffs, coaches go back and forth making adjustments. Nurse eventually made adjustments that they other guys had no answer for. He's not getting as much credit because of having Kawhi.

The media have set pretty low expectations of the Raptors. If they outperform those expectations this year I can easily see Nurse winning COTY.

Though Clifford, Brown, Bud, and Kerr all had more NBA coaching experience then Nurse, Nurse's "head" coaching experience regardless of league is similar, if not more than them. Cliff/Brown/Bud were assistants for a very long time and didn't have much head coaching experience before the NBA. Kerr obviously had none before he was hired by Warriors. So in-game and in-series adjustments were very natural for Nurse. Someone like Bud with his lack of adjustments was telling - maybe because he didn't have much experience with that throughout his career. Nurse's career has always been about adjustments because he coached very volatile roster compositions from game to game.

That’s true. I also think that Nurse having not been “brought up” in the NBA made him more willing to try non-traditional things throughout the season and in the playoffs.

I suspect Budenholzer was bitten by the same thing that got Casey for years; the team was winning in the regular season (to an unexpected degree) so he didn’t really mess with what was working (at the risk of losing games) and that left his team with less ability to make adjustments in the playoffs. Conversely, Nurse basically outright said they’d lose games experimenting with things but it didn’t matter because it was all in preparation for the playoffs. The fact. He got buy in from the team is most impressive.

I'm trying to make sense of their decision making. Last year Spoelstra had zero votes. He misses the playoffs and now he's the 17% of GMs say he's the best coach in the league

Percentages are based on the pool of respondents to that particular question, rather than all 30 GMs.

The same GMs may not have answered this question both years.
