It's hard to find masks anywhere to purchase. And the government is only now (slowly) changing its tune on masks. Up until a week ago, the message was "don't wear masks under any circumstances as they are 100% useless".

In the last 3 days I have arranged orders for 66 thousand surgical masks and 20 thousand KN95s. I'll probably arrange a RGM mask day with a couple of pickup spots around town.

$10 for 10
$45 for 50

No bulk buying. 50 will be the limit per customer.

Will also offer 100 for $85 but you will donate 50 to a nearby nursing home, while keeping 50 for yourself

I’m down for some masks and would mos def donate a portion.

The idea was to park at the location where the donated items would be going. So I go from my car to the facility with donated goods right away, which removes any doubts or concerns people may have about how the extra items will be used. One person has already basically accused me of wanting to resell the donated items over and over as a scam, which really says more about how their brain works than anything else, and I'm glad they aren't the ones doing the mask work. If you have a specific facility in mind, then maybe that's where we can do the mask day meetup.

I'm not selling those to the public. They're mostly going to front line workers, but also some to trades that need them to keep working. They typically want the valve type tho while medical wants the full seal, so they aren't really depleting health care supply by doing so.

While I haven't seen how this is actually done, I think it's mostly a "how to" on wearing them. It's not like they come in multiple sizes or widths like shoes. You need to know how to put it on and adjust for proper seal, then away you go.

I see people with beards wearing them, which is useless, or those who don't have them over the nose, which is also useless. People with religious requirements for facial hair are going to be at a big disadvantage when it comes to masks or respirators.

Wearing something will still keep your own moisture and droplets in, which is commendable and is the main reason for wearing, but that can be done with a surgical or cloth mask that may fit better or be more comfortable, because properly fitted 95s are not, at least not for more than short periods.

ah tru this makes sense. Its just my buddy is bout to start his residency and was telling me aobut he has to get fitted every year or so to ensure his masks fit properly so i was wondering if like normal ppl had access to this testing or whatever. IM sure it may not be secure or whatever, but its better then nothing

thats why i dont get why normal ppl going for groceries cant be given those 55 million expired masks. i mean if they are expired, just give them to us, obvs let ppl know that they still gotta practice everythign else.

No no. Those 59 million "expired" masks are still 100% effective and need to go to front line workers. The filter materials are inert and can function just fine, and would after 50 or 100 years, probably. We're not talking food or even cloth/paper here. The only thing that can expire is the elastic if it's been either exposed to light, or stored at high temperatures, and neither of those things typically happen.

Those expiry dates are more about the manufacturers and suppliers getting ongoing replenishment orders than anything else.

At the risk of enraging our resident anti mask crusader, I thought this was an interesting illustration based on an actual study

Image

So the N95 offers nearly 99% inbound protection (which is known, even though 95% is the minimum standard)
A surgical blocks out 75% and a teacloth mask blocks out 67%. These are not nothing.

As for outward protection, I find the numbers a little odd, though I guess it's because exhaling often leaks out the sides or bottom of any mask (even the 95s). Still, a surgical mask reduces contaminants by 50% and an N95 about 70%. These are also not nothing.

Combined together, it paints a pretty clear picture that if you want to slow both transmission and infection, mask wearing can be a substantive tool in doing so - and of course in combination with other measures.

Or in other words...

A lot of what's in that video is actually a "how to properly wear" thing, and the test is done to see if it's worn right or not. With so few options for models or sizes - or basically ANY 95 level respirator at the moment - it really comes down to how well you can make it fit and get a seal.
