And it's no thanks to their leader from what I'm hearing. He's just as bad as Trudeau if not worse. It's just that their medical system, which has been long established is different from that of countries like US or Canada and they have a well-established culture of wearing mask already thanks to Chinese pollution.

How does a healthcare system coordinate itself? Direction obviously came from the government.

Wearing masks certainly helped, but it's our government's fault for telling people not to wear masks and for letting supply drop to dangerously low levels.

But the biggest reason for Korea's success was their aggressive testing.

It had everything to do with testing like crazy, then tracking everyone down by enforcing a law that would never be allowed here (GPS data, credit card records, etc) and forcing them to stay in quarantine. But in general their people are more obedient in following safety guidelines than some of the morons we have here

Nurses are running out of face masks worldwide including here in Canada because all these idiots bought up everything, and since their suppliers cut staff we’re running out of masks for frontline workers In the medical field. You know a bunch of idiots have stocks of them in their houses.

My friends co-worker (nurse) just tested positive. It infuriates me that people keep writing everyone should have masks and that they provide so much protection when most people are not even wearing them properly and on top of that they are not following other safety guidelines. By saying **** like this to people, those people then go out looking to buy masks.

I saw a lady at the park putting here fingers under her mask to eat something. This is with her being in a big group and their kids all playing together and interacting with one another. Like honestly people keep bringing up how much masks help when this is how people are wearing them? This moron likely has boxes of masks at home

Healthy people do not need masks, especially right now. You are gaining minimal protection without covering your eyes, and most people touch their face more which means you are doing more harm than good. They are meant for sick people and HCW that are in close contact with those sick people to prevent spread.

STOP BUYING MASKS. IF YOU HAVE A STOCKPILE KEEP SOME IN CASE YOU GET SICK AND PLEASE DONATE THE REST

if you want grocery stores/restaurants to remain open, then you will need the wholesalers and logistics companies to drive the goods to those stores to stay open. when you call in for your order, the telcom people have to make sure it works, and when you pay for your goods, the banks need to stay open to facilitate the money movement. you can tie manufacturing and production to groceries as well, who will make your food to have it ready on the shelves?

Construction i don't understand, maybe it applies to infrastructure programs such as transportation and healthcare. highways need to stay maintained so those trucks bringing in the food dont crash due to some huge pothole.

the media needs to stay alive for obvious reasons. i don't understand why research is an essential at this point, possibly related to the coronavirus and new meds?

justice sector is obvious

other businesses - machinery, equipment rental, i totally get. mailing and shipping, i totally understand, since im an online shopper and most people are.

laundromats don't need to be there, you can wash your clothes at home or your building. but it can be a commercial need to maintain hygiene in hospitals, and hygiene is a huge issue right now

professional services - you will still need some, such as lawyers, because people will always be commiting crimes. shutdown does not mean people will behave.

Realtor/moving services - not needed at all

Animals services/welfare - yeah since we are a pet heavy nation - it is an essential

Security - obvious reasons

Funeral - obvious reasons, lots of mfs die everyday

these decisions are pretty tough to make, specially when you need to maintain some kind of order. you can shut everything down, but it will just largely affect everything in that list, specially food and healthcare. you shut down the banks, you don't have access to your money, you shut down the media, you don't have access to information, you shut down telecom, you don't have freedom to communicate. i agree with above posters that we are not ready for something as significant as that. its too authoritarian and people will lose their ****.

all these industries listed above will face significant job losses tough, only the companies that are well connected to the main needs right now will thrive.

I couldn’t really tell from the list.....are banks (branches) essential? Will they remain open?

yeah theyre open, but just slow.

It's really idiotic. Masks should be reserved for healthcare professionals, not regular healthy people going to the grocery store. Just like computer malware, the human is the first line of self defense. Don't lick your fingers. Don't pick your nose. Don't rub your eyes. Don't stop washing your hands. Follow that and you're already 99% safe from this virus when you go outside. That mask is not going to prevent stupidity.

My GF and I went grocery shopping on the weekend for the first time since the lockdowns, and more than half the people in the store were wearing masks, but without gloves or goggles. For some reason people think this virus is like smog that you breathe in the moment you step outside. Your brain is the most effective defense. All the other stuff are just guardrails, with masks being the least effective of the bunch.

if i need to, im taking some paper towel, folding it in half, putting it over my mouth and tying a raptors scarf around my face to keep it secure, then will just wash the scarf every week or so. Im lucky in the sense im fully wfh so I dont have to go out until I need to get groceries.

Goggles or fake glasses are easier to find....take a piece of laminate and glue to the frame so when you put it on, your face is covered.

Its not medical, but it is better than nothing if you need it. Other than that, wash your damn hands and dont touch your damn face lol.

I'm surprised people aren't wearing ski goggles and helmets yet. (Though I did see a video of someone wearing a full-out costume to Shoppers...)

It's sad that healthcare proffessionals are running out of equipment (my mother works at a hospital). But the virus is airborne, what stage will they really tell the public that yet remains to be seen. The question isn't if it's airborne, the question is how long and far is it airborne.

yogimvp wrote:the "essential" list is such a joke. pretty much everyone is going to be working. i was expecting a real shutdown.

All of those things are pretty essential to the function of our infrastructure and supply chains. A lot of those jobs aren't stacked on top of each other in offices, and use some form of PPE. The ability to work while observing distancing is really good.

Conversely, things like malls and secondary retail and restaurants and hair salons and night clubs and sales offices and music stores and gyms and nail spas and book stores (and on and on) all need to be closed, because of frequently being in close proximity to others or frequently touching things that everyone else is touching. These are high risk vectors of transmission and all places that we can do without for a time without some kind of trickle down issue of supply, maintenance, urgent service, etc...

It's actually a very good list and means that about a third of the workforce will keep the wheels of the province turning (with distances more easily observed), a third of the workforce will be working from home or remotely (isolating), and a third of the workforce - the non critical yet highest risk places - will be shut down to contain the spread.

It's ideal.

WTF

The man, who had just returned from Florida, was unconvinced by Linton, saying “I’m being careful.” He went into Walmart to buy garbage bags.

The problem is that supply was always low and we never had the manufacturing capacity to meet increased demand. Masks are almost all imported since no one uses them here during regular flu seasons, because the government tells you not to.

Front line staff aren't running out because of the stuff the public bought up. Hospitals and nursing homes and police departments don't buy their stuff at Home Depot and Princess Auto - the stuff made exactly for the public to buy at retail pricing instead of high volume supply chain pricing for those who use them constantly. In a time of shortage they might try, but the shortage exists because of a lack of stocking and preparation and tighter budgets. They shouldn't run out in the first place - that was not the public's fault.

Further, the suppliers are not cutting staff because this is basically peak volume for them right now, taking orders and trying to take care of their health care and first responder customers. A lot of the stocks were actually stolen IN the hospitals by the very same people who are now short, because they wanted to make sure their families had some. Now they're told not to wear them or recycle, because bringing your own would either A) look bad or wasteful or B) look like you had stolen goods

this has been unchecked in this continent since jan - that's 2.5 months of free movement, socializing, travelling. my guess is that tens of millions of people have it but are unaware. if my hypothesis is correct, then the lethality of it is much lower than expected.

but none of this means anything b/c we are blind until everyone who has it (or had it - using antibody testing) is tested to get a more accurate %.

Italy's numbers basically confirm China's numbers

death rates require #'s of total people that have or has had it. nobody has those numbers.

for example, cdc says 35 mil people had the flu in 2018/19. of those numbers 490k required hospitalization and 34k of them died. now, the 34k is a huge number, as is the 490k - but when you see 35 mil, you don't shut down countries b/c of it. we don't have that total number therefore we are operating a blindly here. the huge worry at this point is overrun hospitals b/c if everyone is going into critical care at once, then we can't support it - that's the major cause for concern for a new virus since we don't know how our bodies react to it. but overall, we need to test every single person to see if they have it or had it.

there are 60 mil people in italy. they currently have about 64k cases. but the question is exactly how many people got tested?

i think in the US, we should sample a 50k-100k group of people (all ages/sexes/nationalities) to see how many are infected and prorate it (like how nielsen does their tv ratings). pick a part of nyc and just test everyone - symptoms and no symptoms. that would give us a much better picture of how dangerous/widespread this disease really is.

Wow, that's smart. Wouldn't even take that many tests and you could do it in every major city just to get a remotely rough idea of what's going on...

Fat **** chance that's going to happen.

Simply say the lack of supply is due to those being paid hundred thousands a year at the government and did not act onto it, and now blaming public for buying when it was other countries who bought them up. Few pages ago a youtube explained Taiwan started additional production on mask and giving them to citizen. Macau as I know they bought the mask ahead and giving them to citizen.

Clearly it is a race between government, those cities with better leaders get the mask, while you are calling them "idiots" (who bought up everything), some call them genius.
