they might say equally qualified, but not the case, and no I have no way to prove it.
I appreciate you for taking the time to look at it. I hope you also understand what it means as well. The government has a good explanation of it all to help you interpret that section. I'll provide it to you here: https://www.justice.gc.ca/eng/csj-sjc/rfc-dlc/ccrf-ccdl/check/art15.html

Scroll down about 75% of the link and start reading from the following section: (iii) Framework of analysis for section 15(2)

After reading that let me know whether you stand by your original stance or whether your opinion has changed. I'm really interested in hearing your thoughts.

Yes, you are right about the law. Trust me I agree with it, but its just not the case with some parts of the federal government. Especially Parks Canada. As I said I cannot prove it but just walk into any Parks Canada Interpretive Building in Newfoundland and you will have no problem seeing what I am talking about.

Leo is pretty orange, so he shouldn't count as white.

And he was the best broadcaster this team has ever had and it’s not even particularly close.

this is a great topic filled with lots of amazing insights, but i gotta say, not to discredit or put down anyone's opinions but there are quite a lot of black and other racial minorities on sportsnet and probably one or two on tsn.

OK so can we make whatever percentage of people of color sports commentators , and while we are at it we should also make whatever percentage of white people in Canada is as as a percentage of players on our team too since it is only fair right .

there are two possible ways to answer to this. you could acknowledge this reality has almost endless variables that make it impossible to explain with one simple factor.

or you could just blame it on "racism" like an idiot and call it a day

This has been on my mind for over a minute and I don't think there's a lot of light shed on this at all.

Toronto has grown into a very diverse multicultural city, with people from every part of the world. We have many first, second and third generation immigrants living here, from all over the world. It is common to see people from Africa, Asia, the Middle East and a huge diverse range of mixed racial people.

I'd assume that since the population of Toronto has been so damn diverse, that we'd let the younger demographic fill in as sports broadcasters and analysts. At the very least, have more of a representation.

Yet, every time I watch our sports media there's a huge number of Caucasians. TSN is used in this post, but this applies to Sportnet and Radio personalities as well.

Basketball Broadcasters might have a little more color, but beside maybe what, Paul Jones and Sherman Hamilton (and the random peppering in of Sam Mitchell), I honestly don't see more minorities covering basketball. Especially for a league that's predominately black. Even among the younger and minor analysts, we got guys like Josh Lewenberg (who seems completely out of touch with young Toronto) covering the media. Yet colored person in sight.

And Jesus Christ, don't get me started on Hockey personalities. I'm gonna throw up.

The Black Lives Matter movement gave me a chance to really look into what's going on within Canada, and I'm surprised nobody has brought up what happened to Hal Johnson and TSN in the 90's.

Television personality Hal Johnson, who co-hosted the Canadian health and fitness segment Body Break, says the long-running series was started to combat racism.

In a four-minute YouTube video posted Monday, Johnson explains the origins of the series, which he has hosted with wife Joanne McLeod for more than 30 years.

He begins the video by revealing how, in June 1988, he was hired by TSN to be a sports reporter. On the same day Johnson found out he'd landed the position, he received another call from the same person saying that he wouldn't get the job after all.

The reason? Johnson was told TSN executives said the network already had one Black reporter and didn't want to have two.

TSN even sent out an apology tweet, yet the above mentioned "ratio", still seems like an issue here today.

Read on Twitter

The below is a list of analysts hired by TSN, and it's disgustingly disporportionate.

Jack Armstrong – Basketball analyst
Craig Button – TSN Hockey Director of Scouting
Darren Dreger – TSN Hockey insider / studio analyst
Matt Dunigan – CFL on TSN studio analyst / colour analyst
Ray Ferraro – TSN Hockey colour analyst
Duane Forde – CFL on TSN colour analyst
Tim Hauraney – Formula 1 analyst
Mike Johnson – TSN Hockey studio analyst / colour analyst
Russ Howard – Curling on TSN colour analyst
Pierre LeBrun – TSN Hockey insider
Bob McKenzie – TSN Hockey insider / studio analyst
Jamie McLennan – TSN Hockey studio analyst / colour analyst, OverDrive host
Pierre McGuire - TSN Hockey TradeCentre analyst (mostly appears on NBCSN)
Jeff O'Neill – TSN Hockey studio analyst, OverDrive host
Jesse Palmer – NFL on TSN analyst
Jabari Greer – NFL on TSN analyst
Steve Phillips – baseball insider
Dave Poulin – TSN Hockey studio analyst
Leo Rautins – Basketball analyst
Brian Spanton – TSN Rugby analyst
Milt Stegal – CFL on TSN studio analyst
Glen Suitor – CFL on TSN colour analyst
Bob Weeks – Golf analyst
Tracy Wilson – Figure Skating colour analyst
Scott Ferguson – Baseball analyst
Scott Mitchell – Baseball analyst
Davis Sanchez – CFL on TSN contributor
Henry Burris – CFL on TSN analyst
Bryan Hayes – Hockey analyst, OverDrive host
Steven Caldwell – Soccer analyst
Kristian Jack – Soccer host/analyst
Luke Wileman – Soccer analyst
Terry Dunfield – Soccer analyst
Kevin Sawyer – Hockey analyst
Dave Naylor – CFL insider

That's 4 analysts out of 35 that are racially diverse, with 3 of them reporting on the CFL, and one for the NFL.

It trickles down to even sports columnists and blog writers. I just find it so damn interesting that guys with perhaps the most inferior writing products out there, a la Doug and Michael Grange, are happily employed and have job security, while the minority statistics are this damn bad.

Thoughts?

Because Canada's top sports are hockey and curling and TSN is primarily a hockey and curling station. If you want more representation its simple make non whites like hockey/curling and get them to apply for jobs.thread/.

Having this poll on realgm was as dumb as pissing into the wind.

Of course Canadian media has a racism problem because Canada as whole has the same problem. Some people are so dense. They think so long as the KKK isn't out in the streets and have members getting elected to office then everything must be fine. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

It certainly has a anti-white undertone. I think he's borderline racist towards whites himself but doesn't realize it.

One q I have is whether or not there is actually a reversion in terms of hiring. I'm not sure these types of personalities exist now. We assume these things have a linear trend but it looks like things have fallen back a bit to me.

The amount of people of color/visible minorities reflected in the media reflect the general population of canada. Its just the law of percentage; however, I'm sure years ago people of colour absolutely faced discrimination when it comes to hiring practices and promotions.

We shouldn't also pigeon-hole people in positions they are not qualified for due to an under-representation. It should be based on merit, there's a reason Alvin Williams has a job and Mo Pete doesn't. He's just way better at doing it.

Sports media totally has a bias towards a certain anchor type. That type is suburban white and boring. Even when they offer a mixed race of performers to read the news they are always the same “type”. Yes it is boring and terrible.

We as Canadians love to apologize for and hide from these obvious biases. We pretend we’re ok because we’re not as bad as the US. A fact that does not make us good.

Is the NBA racist because its mostly black? Is the NHL racist because its mostly white? This social justice stuff is just WAAAAAAAY too much right now. Im a person of colour. Ive had TONS of ethnically different friends and this whole race talk...this whole race talk itself is racist. I feel now everyone is making race an issue when it really isn't. Have people ever thought about that individuals make certain decisions and if those certain people end up being one ethnicity is that wrong? I dunno man. I feel like right now race is actually making people more racist. Just creating race problems where they dont exist.

The fact that the word coloured is being thrown around today to discuss equal opportunities is kinda parallel to the point in this thread.

Your situation is very understandable.
Reminds me of the situation they have at Harvard where they raised the standards for Asians but lowered them for Blacks/Hispanic for the sake of diversity.

You have to take into account these activists each have like 200 social media account and are blasting anyone and everyone regardless of context just to keep the momentum going.

I refuse to believe logic has left the people.

Do you think sports broadcasting is an actual meritocracy? Like, the people being interviewed for positions and getting jobs are the absolute best in the business? If so, I have some bad news about almost every single workplace.
