What is OG's ceiling?

Post#1 » by lobosloboslobos » Thu Aug 6, 2020 1:32 am

We have all seen his IQ. His enormous strength and size. His unfazeable focus. His 3 pt shot. His defense. His finishing ability. His hustle. And his growth, notably his suddenly blossoming ability to drive and finish.

This season OG is averaging 11pts a game on 51/39/70 shooting splits. In his last 11 games he is putting up 14 pts on 56/50/77.

He deserves all NBA defensive recognition this year but won't get it. Chances are he will get it next year since people are really waking up to our amazing D and his ability to shut offensive stars down.

He just turned 23 and he's only played 132 games in the NBA. (1.5 seasons)

How good can he be in say 4-5 years?

I would hedge on saying he will be slightly worse in all categories than a prime Artest. If he could ever reach his level, I'd be ecstatic

His body type and the way he dribbles does sort of reminds me of Ron Artest. Both were good at scoring in the paint using their strength, and can hit the 3 ball. Artest was more intense on the defensive end I think.

Ya, i dont think OG can get there offensively, which is why I changed my post to say he'd be slightly worse in all categories lol.

DPOY candidate and can see him getting his ppg up to around 17 in his prime. His offensive development has been pretty immense as of late.

I feel the same way. I haven't seen enough of him offensively yet. He's been given slightly more freedom this season but we mostly only have footage and data of him in a 3&d role. I know it'll never happen but I kind of wish we could throw him down to the Gleague for a few games to see what he can do with the ball in his hands.

in the past 25 seasons here are all the players who have won DPOY with a ppg of 15 or higher

2019: Rudy Gobert (15.9 pts)
2014 and 2015: Kawhi Leonard (21 and 16)
2008-10: Dwight Howard (21, 18, 23)
2007: Kevin Garnett (19)
2003: Ron Artest (19)
1999 and 2000: Alonzo Mourning (21 and 20)
1995: Gary Payton (19)

I think OG definitely has a chance to join that group down the road.

yeah its clear he's made some strides on his off the dribble game and maybe post game but he doesn't really get a leash to show it. Hard to really parse whats there right now

If he's 2014 Kawhi for his whole career, that's a hell of a player.

So I don’t think he will ever be a Pull up threat but he has shown flashes of a 1 dribble pull up jumper.

Offensively he has shown more than flashes of:

- taking defenders off the dribble
- off ball cuts
- attacking mismatches and using good back down dribbles + post work
- catch and shoot

He has yet to do more off the dribble shooting and shooting coming off of screens. I don’t think either of these are all that viable.

If he continues to refine the things I listed then my comparison is a more offensive dynamic Shawn Marion.

If we get that I’d be ecstatic

He's very gifted, he's got all the tools he needs to be great. I just don't see him having that drive. Maybe in time.

But hey, if he's a 14-20 ppg guy, with the defense he plays now... that's freaking great.

I think his peak from 25-30 will see him regularly in the top five for DPOY, with a good chance to win it hopefullly at least once.
I think offensively he will average around 17 pts a game over that stretch. I think at his peak he will have a season where he averages close to 20.
Overall, I see him averaging around 17/8/3.5/2/1.5 on 59/40/79 over his peak.

Since he got in the bubble his defence reminds me of Kawhi. His handles remind me of kyrie.

Ben Wallace with a 3pt shot.
