OT: COVID-19 Ontario 2nd Wave Thread

Seeing as how most of this forum is from Ontario, I thought it might be relevant and interesting to have a thread to discuss the 2nd wave of COVID that is currently grappling our province.

Casinos are also re-opening today. What do you guys think? Is ford doing enough? Do you guys think we will see another full lockdown again?

Current stats can be found here:

With those numbers it sounds like opening casinos is a pretty bad idea.

Our society requires both parents to work full time and for the schools to act as daycare.

It's all bull

Numbers are going up but we sending all our kids to hangout together too

It was always going to be another wave tho the reason we did lockdown was to not overwhrlm the health systems right?

Hopefully a treatment is on the way in the next few months. Read an article about a U.B.C. professor who had helped eliminate SARS and who has created a new drug that apparently eliminates the virus from the body within a few days. We just gotta keep our fingers crossed.

The Ford government seems very reactionary so I'm guessing they will lock down again when hospitalizations and deaths start to spike...but all of that can be prevented if they just start implementing restrictions now. Night clubs and bars are not essential and need to be shut down. Indoor dining also needs to be restricted or taken away.

It really depends how fast the cases will increase.

In countries in Europe like Germany, for instance, they are getting like 2000 cases a day but it's been pretty constant for months.

We are much more prepared now with huge volumes of testing, tracing systems, better treatment etc.

The goal is to keep the rise as slow as possible so that it doesn't overwhelm the hospitals.

I don't think going back to full lock down mode makes sense or is feasible.

The key is to limit large congregations of people indoors in bars, casinos, restaurants from happening. Also reducing social gatherings in houses. I have friends in the past couple months that havn't really cared to have 10+ people over at the house for BBQ's, sports games etc. No doubt that people getting more relaxed with having friends/family over for big gatherings has been leading to major spikes.

Hospitalizations and deaths aren't up. In fact last time we had these numbers those numbers were 3-4x higher. More testing is being done it's still hovering around a 1% positivity rate which isn't bad.

We will probably have to go back to lock down soon, with bars, gyms, indoor dining, schools all shut down. They have been warning us about the second wave since this thing started and damn near every country has experienced it with ours is just starting now.

COVID misinformation. Follow the guidelines issued by the province of Ontario if you feel ill.

I never said hospitalizations and deaths are up...only that the government will only act when it inevitably goes up.

I would rather be proactive rather than reactive. That is all I meant.

Protecting long home care residents should be the highest priority.

This. Hospitalizations and death counts are more indicative of the severity of the situation than raw case counts alone.

The fact that death counts don't seem to be rising (yet?) may be evidence of the fact we're better prepared to cope with things this time around. Lets not forget, the panic back in March was due to the threat of hospitals getting overwhelmed which would have subsequently led to fatalities escalating out of control.

Let me start by saying I would never tell anyone what to do - I have no moral authority or expertise. This is merely a suggestion that my wife and her coworkers share (she and her colleagues are all nurses in Ontario).

If you feel unwell and are curious about whether or not you have contracted COVID, please STAY HOME! DO NOT GET TESTED!

The only reason you or a loved one should ever think about walking into your local clinic or an emergency room or an assessment center is because you or a family member are so ill to the point having your respiratory system comprised leading to hospitalization.

The government of Ontario is counting on people voluntarily getting tested so they can enact more draconian measures and policies that will choke the little freedoms we have left. More testing does not help anything. If you're under the age of 50 you have an 8 percent chance of being hospitalized.

If you want to be tested in lue of a family event of 10 people or less (thanksgiving for example) and don't want to infect family members who are vulnerable people potentially, that makes total sense. But if you feel like **** and have COVID systems - don't **** go to the Thanksgiving ANYWAYS!

I had a bad cold this week (upper respiratory) and opted out of some fun social events I would have otherwise loved to have attended. I'm 99% sure I didn't/don't have COVID but I'm **** damn sure I'm not going to line up at an assessment centre so I can give the government information that I frankly don't have time to give, nor do I want to.

This is just dangerous to spew.

Here's my rebuttal.

If you're sick, get tested. If you're sick, then all the people you've contacted could be sick too. They may even be asymptomatic/pre-symptomatic. How would you feel knowing that you were sick, didn't get tested, and somebody you knew from the gym/your condo/your work place contracted the disease (since it can take a few days for symptoms to show up, so even if you stayed home once you started feeling under the weather, you still could have spread it before symptoms showed up) and visited their 95 year old granny.

Lol what do you think the governments going to do with your information? Have you never gotten your blood tested? Have you never went to a doctor's appointment? What does Ford gain from people staying home? It just screws him, since it makes him look even more incompetent. No one gives a **** about you dude the way you think they do, I'm sorry to say.

We went from 400 cases on some days last week to 700 cases this week. Of course, it's hard to tell whether this is because of more vigilant testing or organic spread. I just hope my gym doesn't get closed down lol.
