Do teams still sell second round picks?

Post#1 » by Rapsalot » Sat Oct 17, 2020 2:52 pm

Just getting thoughts on this?

Years ago I believe on draft night lots of teams were selling second round picks for cash considerations.
This seems to have slowed? I’m pretty sure this doesn’t give you a cap hit?
I know 76ers are a rival and might not want to do this but, they have 5 picks this year 4 second rounders and I’m pretty sure 1-2 of those players never log mins for them outside of G-league. Sac has 4 picks 3 in second round. I’m pretty sure 76ers would not sell 34th but, might sell 36th so we can’t scoop their target in that range.

With all that said I would like us to trade 2023 second or one sooner if we get one and Cash for the 35 or 36th pick this year.

I see Marc G and FVV going out. We could use this pick and our 29th to fill two of our three holes. C, PG and Wing.

MU and team could take best available of three above and then fill another area with 35/36th pick with NBA close to ready player knowing a lot of the Cs this year and this range in draft need to gain weight.

Nba put a cap on money teams could send and receive. Plus rookie contracts didn't increase at the same level as regular contracts, so teams wised up to the contract value of having rookies contracts.

Teams still do trade draft picks for cash but its in addition to picks. it's this year's pick for next year's plus cash, or move down 10 spots etc for some cash.

You don't use a rookie to replace a starter particully a low 1st or 2nd round pick.
We are not tanking.

I agree but, you could use rookie and CB to fight for backup C depending on matchups with SI as starter.
You could also use late first or early second to get backup PG if FVV leaves and or backup wing for OG and NP to start.

With our cap and FA issues and trying to keep cap for next Summer we may have to think outside or around the box.

I think Boucher is a hard worker already, not sure we need competition, but more like we need him to improve his basketball IQ and decision making (eg. passing). Would expect FA to fill the gap instead.

It is just me feeling this year's draft is meh, I wouldn't expect much. I might prefer a high ceiling with higher risk or low reputation, since the lack of tournament and workout, it is harder to determine if the player is NBA ready with skills transferable.

I think it's $3 Million max that can be involved in buy/selling picks.

Reminds me of the BC Era when he threw away a few first round picks and some of his board minions would just say don't worry he will just buy a first round pick to make up for it. Never happened of course, because it was a totally unrealistic expectation by the BC apologist crew.

Second rounders do get moved, and given the current economic situation I can see more of it happening this year.
