SOTD: Stanley 2nd overall in NBA for defensive impact

Post#1 » by VanWest82 » Tue Jan 12, 2021 11:09 pm

538 came out with their first installment of RAPTOR for the 20/21 season. Most of these all-in-one metrics aren't great though theirs at least incorporates a bunch of second spectrum tracking along with line up and plus/minus data.

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/nba-player-ratings/

Obviously this comes with a big small sample size alert but it's not totally unfounded. We've been really stingy with Stanley on the floor this year: 94.8 DRTG vs. 114.4 DRTG with him on the bench. He's also leading the team in steals (3.0) and deflections (4.0) per 36.

It's still unclear whether our offense can function with him out there (probably not), but could Stanley be the missing link to getting our D back on track?

he's looked much improved this year on both ends of the floor. With more regular mins, he also isn't forcing the issue on offense the way he did last season.

He’s playing within his role which has helped him a lot. Last year he was forcing a lot of things I think he was trying to prove to be something he’s not cause of the expectations that came with being a lotto pick. Hope he keeps this up cause now he’s not a negative contract

Wasn’t it like 2 games ago that people were trashing nurse for playing him so much?

Currently Stanley is the only guy on the team with a better on court plus/minus (per 100) than Boucher.

He's a role player, it's all in what you're expecting out of him.

As long as he doesn't chuck up early threes he's fine. That's also the problem, he can't shoot. Teams leave him.

He's looking like a stronger RHJ out there.

The problem is when Stanley and OG are on the court at the same time and neither of them can score.

When Boucher fouled out against the Warriors, and Nurse put Norm in for the defensive possession, I screamed at the TV - "Put in Stanley! Not Norm you idiot!"

Can't believe I would ever say that.

I like the effort he's been putting in the last few games. I don't mind him taking 2-3 threes a game of he's wide open, otherwise, kep moving the ball, play D and set mean screens.
Id consider starting him at the 5 against Charlotte

This seems like it should be true but so far it's been the opposite.

Stanley with OG: 115.0 ORTG
Stanley w/out OG: 93.4 ORTG
OG w/out Stanley: 109.3 ORTG

If he could be consistent with the 3pt shot he could prolong his career with the solid D and above avg athleticism. His handles are decent too.

The eye test says that some players work well together - e.g. Flynn and TD in the Kings game. Stanley and PWJ seemed to click in the bubble. Watson is a scorer, so a lineup with OG, SJ and Watson at the for forward/wing spots might produce some magic.

But I'm down for the tank, so w/e. Right now, it's all about increasing the value of our players.

I thought his decision making wasn't great as well outside of 3 point shooting. Since we limited his touches, we have less turnovers from him on offense.

He seems leaner and more mobile, still funny how many commentators call him Anunoby, he's definitely not as bad I thought, playing through mistakes does help

I thought Watanabe played better defense (better defensive mindset), but I think Johnson is quicker. I think Watanabe can be a 3+D at SF, even he may not be quick enough against the elite PG, he can still defend the other 3 positions.

The bigger problem is it’s hard to tell who’s who. They look way too similar on the court lol

He has been pretty good on the floor. Yesterday he matched up quite a bit with McCollum and he made him work. He also matched up a bit with Melo and also did his thing. Stanley has great feet on defense and doesn't jump too much on pumpfakes.

I think he has earned a rotation spot, even showing a bit of a jumper and some decent straightline drives. He is staying within himself which is key.

Also, Devlin can't tell em apart so it gets super confusing for us.

Small ball doesnt sound too bad with

OG/Pascal/SJ/FVV/Kyle

Curious what that does against a Boston squad.

Stanley's footwork is one of the best on the squad and he can beat his man off the dribble quite a bit and create for others.

He's been so very bad offensively. Not Malachi Flynn bad, but bad.
