Canada lost their first game, a close one against Serbia. A slight surprise, but not a major upset, as Canada is ranked 4th and Serbia 8th in the world. But they came back strong in their second game and easily beat South Korea.

The next game is on Sunday, against Spain. That'll be a tough one, with Spain ranked #3 in the world.

San Antonio is now invested in Primo. So good for him. So good for us. Every chance for success now.

12. Josh Primo - Spurs. Seemingly a big stretch here by the Spurs and the bulk of their fan base hates this pick. Surely they could have traded down and still got Primo. Hopefully the fans calm down. They have a good development system to work with Primo - hopefully for at least a year before they try to force anything with the Spurs.

13. Chris Duarte - Pacers (some talk of the Warriors trying to trade for him)

And a few more updates to add here:

46. Dalano Banton - Raptors. I'm happy with this pick. The Raps are a great developmental organization, and hopefully they are extra careful/patient with him as their first Canadian ever drafted. Banton needs a tonne of development work. I was a little surprised with this one as I did not expect Banton to be drafted. There were rumors tying him to the Raps and I thought he'd get a UDFA deal. But the end result is the same and I think it is good result for both parties.

UDFAs (or the NBA Draft 3rd Round)

Eugene Omoyuri - Mavericks . Eugene immediately signs a "deal" with the Mavs. No word on what type of deal. Two way? Exhibit 10? Time will tell. No surprise seeing Eugene undrafted, but a little surprised he was immediately picked up by the Mavs. Definitely pre-arranged.

AJ Lawson - Heat. Same thing as Eugene, not long after. He signed a "deal" with the Heat. It took a little longer, so perhaps Lawson had a few suitors to choose from (always preferred).

Some are saying teams are backing off going directly into two ways and waiting for what they see in summer leagues before figuring out who gets what. That's a smarter play with the recent changes to two ways (now unlimited practice time with the NBA club, 50 NBA games max. and a 50% of NBA minimum salary which is near $500K). The two-way contracts are becoming ever more important to NBA clubs and they need to be used more judiciously.

Some added reading on the Primo pick for those interested:

https://www.poundingtherock.com/2021/7/30/22601170/determining-josh-primos-role-with-the-spurs-in-year-1

https://news4sanantonio.com/sports/spurs-zone/whats-next-the-joshua-primo-selection

Apparently the Spurs didn't think they could trade down, with plenty of teams interested in Primo in the teens.

Cory Joseph waived by the Piston. Deadline day on his contract was today. Still gets $2.4MM.

Tristan Thompson traded to Sacramento.

Detroit reeling in the Canadian's
Kelly Olynyk - 3 years/37M (third year TO)
Cory Joseph - 2 years/10M
Trey Lyles - 2 years/5M

Not too helpful for the the World Cup and Olympics. But as expected...and they guys are tailing off perhaps making them more likely to play for Team Canada.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has agreed to a five-year, $172 million maximum rookie contract extension, with OKC.
SGA should be in good shape contract wise for the 2023 WC and 2024 Paris Olympics (Murray too). Doesn't mean he'll play, but one hurdle out of the way.

Khem Birch still hanging out there. Chris Boucher I suppose too (team option).

Kabengele playing summer league with the Cavs right now. Yeah, it's only summer league, and he's older than a bunch of the rookies and second year players he's on the court with, but he's looking really good. His defence and rebounding have been excellent.

Not sure how much of a chance there will be he'll get a roster spot with the Cavs, or if he does, if he'll get any minutes behind Allen and Mobley. If Cleveland were to dump Love somehow, which they should probably do, that might open the door to a spot for him.

Nate Darling is out of summer league with a knee injury. I wouldn't bet on him making the Hornets roster this season.

Yeah and the Hornets less than 24 hours later release his rights.

Caleb Agada with a really nice game yesterday - 21p/8r/5a/2s, 8/22 FG, 4/10 3PT, 1/1 FT, 4 TO, 2 PF, 29 MIN
Could he be the first Canadian U-Sports to NBA player? He keeps this up and a 2-way could be a real opportunity.

He did absolutely nothing at the Olympics.

Thanks for pointing that out. Absolutely nothing was equivalent to what most of the other NBA players on Nigeria's roster did.

So irrelevant?

Him making the Nigerian team as one of 4 non-NBA players was curious enough. He is an interesting watch in the Summer League more because no CIS/UPlay player has made an NBA roster in the modern era.

I had a sliver of hope that Canada would host. This will likely mean a poor turnout. It’s going to be a long flight down there. Long time commitment. However, We don’t have a lot of contractual concerns. KO, CoJo (reported player option), Birch, Murray, SGA, NAW, Wiggins, Powell, Dort, RJ and Lyles are all under contract. So, hopefully a few of these guys can stomach the travel.
Also, Brazil is still being hammered by COVID. Still around 40 to 50 thousand cases a day with 1000 deaths. If you had to pick a country that will still be struggling with COVID next summer, it’s probably Brazil.

Theyve stopped making these tournaments direct qualifiers right? So what does americup actually do, just points towards world cup qualifying? They've made it so confusing

You are correct. The Americup is fairly meaningless outside of some jockeying for FIBA rankings and a chance to build chemistry amongst a squad.

I don't know if it changes or not, but the WC Qualifiers are set to begin in November. No exact schedule, locations or pools out yet.

Updated FIBA rankings should come out this week. We could drop as Nigeria and Iran (lol!) should jump us. Not sure if the win over Greece in the Qualifiers is enough to jump us above VEN, PR, DR (likely not).

The FIBA Americas teams not USA will probably fall but Canada should close the gap some and every little bit counts. Nigeria will for sure pass Canada. The teams above Canada will rearrange but beyond Nigeria and Iran none of the teams below them will shift much other than Japan.
