Because it helps create 'superteams' to boost ratings for the playoffs. The whole league (the team owners) profits because, better ratings equals bigger TV contracts, so everyone goes along with it. Players go along with it as well, as bigger TV contracts equals bigger salaries.

Just accept that this is a basketball entertainment business, barely a step above wrestling, and go enjoy the spectacle.

Why anyone would actually gamble on something that has the perception of being so heavily rigged is beyond me.
