Average volume shooter? He’s a 39% 3pt shooter on over 5 attempts per game.

I think his defense will be better after a full training camp. Trent has a high basketball IQ and he puts in effort on the defensive end. I think his issues last year were adjusting to Toronto’s schemes, which are known to be complex.

As far as his contract, unless he forgets how to shoot he’ll be a 25 year old who makes 3s at a 40% clip during that option year. That’s an easily tradable asset to a contender.

There’s 84 players during the season that shot a higher percentage from 3 than him.

38.5% is literally the definition of average when nearly 100 guys can shoot it the same/better.

Like o said . Mediocre. If his % drops to 36% from 3 he actually becomes a pretty below average player.

84 players? You’re really going to count guys who shot 100% by going 1-1 from deep for the season?

Trent averaged 4.4 3PA per game. Of the players who took 4 or more 3PA per game last year only 24 shot over 40%. Trent had the 7th highest 3P% of those 24.

Thx for clearing this up Leo. Trent passed the eye test for me when he first came over before being injured. I believe he will be a better player than Powell who had some obvious weaknesses.

Middle of the list (4 3PA per game or more, played more than 20 mins per game, played more than 30 games), first page is 50, and he is listed on the 2nd page out of 140 players:

Even if he is average, I don't think that most shoot at his volume, or off the dribble as often.

There's an interesting conversation happening here surrounding age/ potential. What's incredible is that both sides are right. While growth isn't linear, I think that most would agree that a younger prospect has more value around the league for sure. A Senior in the draft definitely isn't regarded as having as much potential, largely because GMs would prefer a 19yo vs a 22yo.

3) Danny Green is not worth the 16m that the Lakers offered him in the 2019 off-season. Why would the Raptors overpay for Green when Vanvleet outplayed him in the playoffs?

Are you saying that the 2019-2020 season/playoffs was meaningless? We were within minutes from going to the conference finals. Had Covid-19 not hit our team we would've had the 2nd best record in the East and home court in the 2nd round against the Celtics. Also I doubt Siakam would have been in such a slump had Covid not hit us as well.

Are you suggesting that Masai should have traded Gasol and Ibaka during a season where we were on pace for our best record in franchise history?

Talk about captain hindsight...

1) nothing we could do to convince players to stay
2) standing pat until players decline with age then you could say letting them leave for nothing were great decisions.
3) signing a bunch of obscure player (no one are fighting over) to tradable contracts

If those are the criteria to "great asset management", I would make a great GM as well.

Now, trading lowry for precious is a good move. signing OG to a friendly contract is a good move. But I only give credit when credits are due. I dont think the entire championship core leaving with little in return is an ideal outcome, especially when there's nothing to play for once Kawhi left. 2019 is absolutely meaningless to me.

Winning the last pre pandemic championship is meaningless to you? The Raptors winning a championship is meaningless? It's actually the best pro team outcome that I've ever experienced!

"He thinks".... He does? This poster writes line after line of continuous stupidity. I know Masai doesn't think you can endlessly milk a championship but Miami hasn't won one since LeBron big three'd South beach. Boston is good but not great and they after much wheeling-dealing have hit walls since decommissioning It Factor and end of the road KD not to mention Danny Ainge. We did not build a dynasty as our redirected superstar had predictable L.A. plans. Even then there was no guarantee he could stay healthy long term. This is actually the first Masai team without players he inherited. Can't criticize the starting line of an obvious rebuild.

Yeah but it kinda sucks for the team assuming he breaks out and you already gotta pay him again in 2 years

If I was Trent I’d be on myself too. Either that or you offer me 5 year 90-100M or 4 year $80M contract instead. Those would be the only way I sign a 4 or 5 year contract at his current age.

Why didn't we offer those amounts if that got the deal done? A couple million more for cost certainty and asset retention, I think we probably did, but Klutch wants to renegotiate a UFA when the next TV deal comes into play. If OG and Trent are playing well, we will have to pay them wayyyyy more than $20 mil a season.

Both were RFAs, and we didn't really leverage that to our advantage IMO.

1. Trent thinks he's better than that
2. Raptors don't think he's better than that.

Thats how Masai rolls tho - he wants his guys to make their money - nothing wrong with that, and he still gets a little off the top usually because he tells them the truth about their limitations (demar not a full super max, kyle lowry signing for 10m and becoming an all star, etc.)
