Casey beat Covid just to face the Raps. That's determination.

There was never any doubt.

Casey pounded the rock out of covid!

In a perfect world (where everyone is healthy) his rotation looks like:

- Khem and Precious share the 5 spot, important to get them early in the game when team is fully healthy
- Ideally wants to get Boucher 20 minutes a night
- Flynn has grown in the sense that he's able to come into the game and organize the team well
- Says Flynn needs less volume & be more efficient

That's all he had to say. He's been pleased with the way Boucher has been playing as of late.

Most of that sounds consistent with what he does in practice, but:

No mention of Yuta, Champagnie, Svi after those top 8 seems puzzling because they all play minutes presently.

The guy that always gets zero minutes, Flynn, is the guy he went out of his way to prop-up. Makes no sense because he is not finding anything but garbage minutes for him.

Banton has fully slid out of the rotation as well, and sigh, David Johnson is healthy and not playing with either the 905 or Toronto. I think the second rounders were a bit of bust considering there are a bunch of second rounders from the past draft playing now: Brandon Boston Jr., Aaron Wiggins, Sandro Mamukelashvili.

I do like both our guys long-term, but I think with seconds you should be shooting for guys who can help now, not future players. David Johnson, I think could help now, but his injuries have derailed him too much.

He didn't go out of his way to discuss Flynn, rather he was asked directly about where Flynn is in the development process. Nurse basically said that Flynn is still figuring it out and that he wants him to be less of a volume shooter.

But yeah, he didn't really discuss any other bench players. Probably because they've all been so inconsistent and none of them have been able to secure a spot in the rotation. Nurse has been juggling those cards all season long & isn't confident enough in either of them. Svi looked good in preseason, then fell off. Banton started out the season well, then fell off. Yuta came back from injury and looked good, then fell off. Here's hoping Champagnie sticks.

Svi had a bunch of moments early on, before Pascal came back, where he hung around after a basket or a miss, and stole the outlet. He had a few nice drives showing his euro step and even dunks with his "sneaky" hops. I recall a center jump ball where he sealed the man beside him, stole the backtap and went for a dunk. None of that good stuff lately.

Funny though I don't care about seeing any more sneaky athletic moves or city game drives. Just hit open threes Svi.

Svi seems like he should be a lot better than he is. We’ve all seen him torch us as a member of the Pistons and OKC. He even looked like Manu Ginobili in pre-season this year. Time to step it up man!

Quick math.

48 minutes x 5 spots = 240 minutes

"36-38 minutes a night" for the big 5..let's say 36 = 180 minutes
+ 20 minutes each for Boucher, Birch, Achiuwa = 60 minutes

180 + 60 = 240 minutes

That's your rotation come playoffs. None of the other guys matter.

The only question is whether one of Achiuwa/Birch/Boucher get pushed out by a trade for a 20mpg ballhandler on the bench instead.

I expect to win but given our history with Casey and the status of a few players it could be close.

With that being said the Pistons at +7.5 is an attractive bet tonight. Put a smallish bet on Detroit to cover which I will gladly lose.

Stewart also went off for 20 against us last time. His over tonight is 8.5 points. That being said that game we only played Boucher and Birch a total of 28 minutes and Achiuwa was unavailable. Giving consideration to the over but waiting to see what happens with Barnes and Trent.

Forgot that last time was the game we gave Dragic 28 minutes as FVV was out. We also have Banton 19 minutes and only played Flynn 4 minutes. Situation has not really got any better for Flynn.

The Pistons are the new Bobcats, no matter how terrible they are, they somehow find a way to beat the Raptors.

However their main weapon, Dwane Casey might not even be present, the Raptors have a shot.

We arent gonna lose to the worst team in the league twice in one season. Its not gonna happen. They are gonna get reminded that its not acceptable and blow them out. Take Toronto on the over.

This is the main reason why the Raptors always lose to the Pistons.

Casey knows this more than anyone else in the league.

I'm thinking Nurse has to make some adjustment this game.

Why would you use second rounders on guys who you hope can help now when most second rounders never become good enough to play rotation minutes in the NBA? We haven't had any trouble getting the type of guys who can fill holes on the bench in the past - RHJ, Bembry, etc. as free agents. There are tons of those guys out there. With our second rounders we're looking for guys who can be a part of our organization long term, not one or two year stop gaps.

I still think Banton should have been playing more. He hasn't been good recently but neither have most of the other bench guys. Otherwise I think they should send him for a solid stint of a few weeks with the 905 so he can concentrate on a defined role for a little while. As you said, Johnson has been hurt (multiple times), so for all we know they might have envisioned him contributing a little by now but he hasn't been able to.

Hopefully tonight we can step on the Pistons early for a change and get all of these guys some extended playing time.

it has nothing to do with our defense

guys just hit career highs and higher than their shooting averages against us

this shooting cant be sustainable

raptors defensive strategy is to neutralize the opponents top 2-3 players and give up shots to the other players, and occasionally the others go off.
its part of the gamble.

Cade versus Barnes part 2 will be fun. High school teammates now going against each other at the highest level. I think Barnes actually hounded Cade pretty good in the first matchup.... Toronto really only lost because they were missing FVV.

I'd expect a Toronto W tonight unless the Pistons get hot and shoot 40%+ from deep. Although the Raptors are 9.5 point favorites tonight I wouldn't be surprised to see Detroit keep it closer than that.

Return to Toronto Raptors
