Conditional draft picks and future considerations in trades

Was talking with a buddy and he brought this concept up in regards to the Kawhi trade. In other sports you can attach conditions and future considerations.

These are from the NHL

A conditional draft pick is a stipulation attached to a traded player, stating that if certain predetermined conditions are met, the terms of the deal will be altered. These conditions are designed to safeguard teams against overpaying for a player or to sweeten the deal if specific performance benchmarks are achieved.

"future considerations." This involves trading a fringe NHL player with the potential of receiving compensation, such as a late-round draft pick, at a later time. While these trades seldom make headlines, future considerations provide a flexible mechanism for teams to manage their rosters.

The premise being that perhaps the Raptors and Spurs had an agreement of sorts. That if they made the finals additional compensation A would be sent and if they won the Chip compensation B would be sent.

My buddy made the argument that this is why the Thad deal was made, and possibly why the Jak deal was made. Essentially we owed them a couple picks...

Super illegal in the NBA. But it would be a decent addition IMO

Doesn't happen in basketball and if it did there would likely be ridiculous penalty if found out. I don't know, but that is my assumption. NBA is very particular about circumventing the CBA.

Agree that it is highly unlikely. I think it would be a good add to future CBA though.

No Masai just f'd up. There was no secret deals going on.

Should've done the Lowry trade in season instead of the summer, could've opted out of the Dragic deal. Heat had to opt in to make the deal work.

Should've put on much better protections on the Poeltl pick. At least top 12 or something.

This thread will just end up a vehicle for folks to rag on past errors. There is no way this is a thing.

Would be an interesting addition, but as others have said, I don't see it ever happening.
