Raptors, Pascal Siakam Eye December 30 As Deadline For Contract Extension: Grange

Post#1 » by JD143726 » Fri Dec 29, 2023 6:33 pm

"The Toronto Raptors and Pascal Siakam see December 30 as a potential deadline to make a decision about a contract extension, sources told Michael Grange of Sportsnet."

https://www.sportsnet.ca/nba/article/raptors-facing-crunch-time-on-futures-of-siakam-anunoby/

"Potential" deadline. What weak phrasing, can't hold Grange accountable for anything.

Also says the Raptors don't want to tear down and rebuild and that Pacers have been calling

A smart front office would either sign him to an extension before this date and have him tradable during the draft or trade him now so he can sign a 4-year extension with his next team but I think we already know what this front office will do.

Nothing.

This date is important, we can't sign Siakam that will beat other teams in free agency if it goes passed this point. The only way to do this is to let him expire and run the risk. Also, if he's traded to another team before this date other teams can also extend him to the number that would beat out any teams in free agency, providing them with that security blanket. Obviously we ain't gonna do a damn thing because that's what the front office does but w/e. Siakam likely hit's the summer as a free agent and we play russian roulette again.

It's crazy we all used to trust Masai. What on earth happened?
Now most feel like he will somehow screw this up.

What's your beef with Grange?

Masai messed up, Siakam didn't help the cause by not shutting his mouth about not signing extension with a new team.

Least risk move is sign Siakam to extension by tomorrow, then look to trade him next year at risk of losing another player with no return.

Am I hopeful Masai have some common sense? No at this point

If Grange is accurate in his reporting, this is great news. It means Pascal is working with the team. If he is also looking at December 30th as a deadline for extension, it means he is partially negotiating his possible summer destinations via trade now. A lot of teams can't do sign and trades in the summer or would hard cap themselves so extending now opens up getting 8% yearly increases on his salary and all possible teams.
When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?

Please advise….

Pascal, I appreciate what you've done for the team over the years but it's time to go. New chapter! Bye championship guys! Long overdue!

What happened is he didn’t do anything for 5 years from a team management perspective.

Never thought Masai could become this complacent since the chip but here we are. I feel like he's completely lost his passion.

For the better part of 5 years, all he's been doing is kicking the can down the road.

Eventually, the road runs out and you have to stop kicking the can and actually do something.

As I've said in other threads though - it seems there's been little to no motivation to do anything because he's already won the chip and the team is still making money.

Siakam is 30 in 2 months. NBA peak performance for players is 28. Unless the team is contending, extending him at these rates is taking on unnecessary risk on a flawed roster. It's best for both parties to move on.

I'm a bit iffy on S&Ts so can that work for Siakam if he signs another deal with us next summer?

If both parties view December 30th as a deadline, it means that this is basically a delayed sign and trade to get around cba restrictions on teams in the tax doing sign and trades, and/or teams being hardcapped after sign and trades. If Pascal was willing to just sign an extension and stay, why would he view December 30th as a deadline?
