Gilbert Arenas is a fountain of insider truth! He came out and spilled the beans on secret contracts and deals. While everyone in 'the business' knows a lot of shady stuff is happening around compensation to players, nobody is talking.

Why should they? Rich teams can offer secret 'perks' to get All Star players. Those players are getting more money. Win Win right? Well Salary Cap circumvention is 'suppose' to be a serious violation of the NBA rules. It is if you're stupid and get caught. However the Knicks and Leon Rose aren't stupid. And they are driving truckloads of money around the NBA Salary Cap system.

“They had a Viper, a Ferrari, the Lambo downstairs, the Corvette, you know what I mean. So what we were trying to do is we were trying to sign an under-the-table deal. You know, one year 4.9 and then having the contract already signed, seven years 79 million. So, that was the deal that I was gonna sign now and then we was both gonna hold it in the vault,” said Arenas. So this 'secret' stuff isn't a conspiracy theory. It's real and it's happening.

Now in Gilbert's situation there were two sides to his planned secret deal...the team and himself. Either could have gone public and the NBA would have nailed the Golden State Warriors up on the Cross with millions in fines and tons of draft picks taken away. There's risk in making these secret deals...especially for the team.

Now what if the team and the player were represented by the same Talent agency?

Well that's what's going on in New York with the Knicks right now. Leon Rose, former president of talent agency CAA, is now president of the Knicks. Leon's son still works at CAA and in fact is OG Anunoby's current player agent (starting to smell where I'm going here???). The Knicks have been assembling CAA represented players who 'suddenly' and 'magically' all want to come to the Knicks now. Hmmmm...

When recent reports came out that OG's agent was telling teams he would take LESS money to go to the Knicks this summer my head did a double-take. Whaaaat? He's been with the Raptors his entire career but he'll take 'less money' to be in NY? OG Anunoby has no family or other personal ties to NY. It's just a really big city to him. In the NBA...when you see something that's 'strange'...follow the money! When someone says they'll take 'less' you know they are lying and getting MORE!

It is no 'coincidence' that OG's player agent is Leon Rose's son with CAA. Actually OG recently switched agents in June 2023 from Klutch Sports to CAA. That's a big move going into a contract year for a player. To pry away a top guy from Klutch must have taken a really good sales pitch. A promise of MORE money than Klutch could get him...and they drive some of the toughest deals in the NBA!!! How is Leon's son gonna get OG MORE money than Klutch could get him???

Well this brings us back to Gilbert who spilled the beans on exactly how Leon and his son are working here. Any 'secret' deal with a CAA represented player on the Knicks is a fully controlled Secret. Both ends of the deal lead to the same CAA family. All under the same Roof. Pretty smart Hey! There's only so many coaching jobs to give players fathers right? Sometimes you gotta just throw money at them!

Can I prove OG's gonna get some secret deal with the Knicks? Of course not! They are professionals and have been doing this for a long time. This is all speculation on my part based on a lot of work and great sources. However if I was working at the NBA in their enforcement cubicles I would be digging really, really deeply into every CAA player the Knicks are accumulating right now. Where are these Ferrari's and Lambo's coming from? In OG's specific case who suddenly becomes a big investor in his London Basketball team...with hidden financial details on the investment...right around new contract signing time??? You see the 'extra' money doesn't flow directly into player pockets (unless it's cash), it flows through 'business' deals that are unusually 'sweet' for the player's business.

However Leon Rose and the Knicks look to be taking this 'advantage' to the next level. It is one thing to dominate the player market for Stars like they did with OG. Masai Ujiri, President of the Raptors, was cornered with no escape as soon as OG signed with Leon Rose's son at CAA. He had BETTER trade offers for OG last summer. Now they had all dried up and Masai HAD to make a deal with the Knicks...who are currently suing the Raptors in court. Many were surprised to see both teams swing a deal. The Fact is EVERY GM and President in the NBA know exactly what the Knicks are doing. They are NOT offering big packages for OG anymore! He's repped by Leon Rose's son at CAA...they KNOW he wants to get to the Knicks. They know he's got a secret deal coming that they can't match following the Salary Cap fairly.

However now the Knicks plan to use this secret deal power to circumvent the Salary Cap system EVEN MORE! OG openly said he'll sign a smaller contract with the Knicks. Leon Rose can negotiate a 'league contract' that saves his team precious Salary Cap money while getting his CAA repped player all the money he deserves under the table...and more for coming to the Knicks!

@NBA will never comment on the dangers of NBA teams having extremely tight Player agency ties. Feel free to say you're watching for secret deals carefully however.

OG has wanted out for 2 seasons now because he wants a bigger role. I’m just happy we got a great deal for a guy who didn’t want to be here.

It's actually very easy to circumvent the NBA salary cap rules. Downside is someone exposing it. Don't think there's been much public evidence of under the table deals.

Gilbert Arenas has it all figured out! lol. First of all if they were circumventing the cap, they wouldn't be doing it with flashy Lambos and Ferraris being handed out lol.

I'm sure there are better ways to do this such as Leon Rose the GM of the Knicks, his son is OGs agent, getting more perks from CAA and lower management fees. This helps his dad helps OG.

for sure these big player agencies have power....I didn't like it when Klutch had a chokehold over the Raptors. FVV, Nurse, OG, Trent....you're giving up too much leverage

Not going to read that whole post and OG to the Knicks could very well be clean, but the NBA is isanely corrupt. Under the table deals, talking to other teams while under contract, players talking about taking their talents to south beach, etc.

With that in mind they know OG won't be strictly a rental and feel more comfortable dealing more. In a way it benefitted us as well.

We' ll see if they can get him under contact for a pretty low amount. We offered Kawhi free food for life if he stayed, lol. That's TO circumventing the rules. There have been a lot of vet minimum deals signed where you really wonder. One guy I would never trust is Mark Cuban. Regardless of under the table dealing, OG wants an increased offensive role. If he doesn't get it, he won't be happy and will leave.
As for better deals in the summer, did any include a young player like IQ?
